best IRC client?
sorry for having to ask, but the search function is currently disabled, so I've no other choice.
anyway, I want to get back into IRC (used it a LONG time ago) and want to know what is the easiest and best program to use. also, since I want to do some filesharing, I want a client that handles that easily. finally, what servers and channels are best for filesharing (movies (not porn) are my main interest)? is there a channel for TFP? thanks for any and all help

where to go for filesharing we cannot help you with. Other than that though, here goes my response....
As far as an IRC client, I'd use <a href="http://www.mirc.com">mIRC</a> or <a href="http://www.xchat.org">XChat</a>. Both are quite good - just depends what kind of interface you prefer. There is a TFP channel and it is located on irc.irvingnet.net and the channel name is #tfp.

you can check out www.packetnews.com for irc searches.
mIRC is my choice for best irc client on windows and xchat or BitchX on unix or linux systems.

Quick vote for xchat - on Windows. I spent some time using the irc client built into Trillian, which isn't bad - but it's a bit big if you don't want the ICQ/MSN/yahoo/AIM support.

I highly recommend Hydrairc. ( www.hydrairc.com ) It's modular interface really speaks to me.
As for linux, i'd go with irssi ( www.irssi.org ) any day.

hydrairc is awesome-cool
trillian has decent support, I use it, and it works, but scripting is near impossible. Its main advantage is that the interface is compact - it doesnt take up your whole monitor, all the others here do. mirc is popular, and deservedly so, but also has exploits and a confusing interface xchat is very cool, on par with mirc, yet less popular Those are the ones Ive used, there are others, like irssi, but I havent tried 'em. |

I've used a lot of different IRC clients since I started chatting in 1996. Today my favorite (which has been for about 2 years) is irssi. Plain and simple, enough information, doesn't piss me off. Good client.

Honestly, the best bet is to go download them all and try it out yourself. I use XChat on Windows and then BitchX through command-line UNIX systems.
I've tried mIRC, but didn't like it. You, however, may get different mileage. Try it and find out.

The reason i use mirc is because of the ease in using scripts for it.
I can easily download using bots etc with scripts, set away, set up run commands on timers, etc. Its a great client imo
