Networking between XP and 98se
Yes i know 98se is old, but its usually not too much of a hassle.
The problem is my friend has lent us his XP box whilst he is away, we have a simple network consisting of 3 98se computers on a hub. Two of these computers can browse the XP's shared files fine, after inputting the password, the problem is my machine refuses to do so, it keeps telling me "unkown error 31" has occurred, how the hell is it an unknown error if it has a number??? Any suggestions on what may be the problem? all the computers see eachother fine, and i can move files from XP box to my computer thru one of the other 98se machines, but cant access it myself. |

The way I understand an "unknown error 31" indicates that the initiating PC is supplying a bad password or no passwords. So maybe the PC that can't access the XP machine is giving crap credentials.
I don't know for sure, this is just what I've gleaned from google and the Microsoft Knowledge Base, so there you go. http://www.wown.info/j_helmig/wxpwin9x.htm#error31 I would check the network properties for the machines that can access the XP machine and compare it to the machine that can't. Do you have to logon to the other 98 machines? Here's a page I found about it. It seems to sum up what little information I could find on the problem either on the page directly or with links. I used to run a 98 machine hooked up to my XP machine upstairs. I didn't have any major problems. And, for some odd reason, the one time I had difficulty accessing the XP machine it straightened it out by itself. Well, I ramble.... good luck

On the XP machine, go to Start, then My Network Places, Setup a Home or Small Office Network, after the initiation it will ask if the other computers are XP (not in those words) and offer four options. Click the option that suits your circumstances.
BTW, you will need a blank floppy to do this painless setup. |
