flex (by request)

well, I mentioned I was doing some HW for computing theory in Lex (flex actually), and there seemed to be some interest in hearing what it was and what it was used for. so... I told him I would post up some schtuff about what i was upto.

so, first of all here's a linky to the gnu project page for flex
http://www.gnu.org/software/flex/
Quote:
Flex is a fast lexical analyser generator. It is a tool for generating programs that perform pattern-matching on text. There are many applications for Flex, including writing compilers in conjunction with GNU Bison. Flex is a free implementation of the well known Lex program. It features a Lex compatibility mode, and also provides several new features such as exclusive start conditions.
before I get started ('cuz we all know I dont' always make sense), here's s'more lex materials that can explain it better'n me
flex tutorial (pdf)
gnu's tutorial in as many forms as anyone could ever wish
if that's not more'n you could ever wish for, hit google up with the search terms flex tutorial

and that's flex in a nutshell. I was generating code that matched patterns, for my HW.

flex is used by writing scripts, running them through flex, which creates generated c code that takes input on standard in, and returns on standard out, whatever you want it to.

the scripts are in the following form:
[definitions]
%%
[rules]
%%

where a definition consists of:
[label] [regular expression]

and a rule consists of
{label} [c code to execute on matching the expression defined by label]

(I have no clue if this is making any sense)

so, an example.
here's a script:
Code:
token   b*ab*(ab*ab*)*
ws      [ \t\n]+
%%
{token} {printf("%s accept\n", yytext);}
{ws}    ;
[^ \t\n]*       {printf("%s reject\n",yytext);}
%%
this code will recognise all strings that are accepted by the regular expression b*ab*(ab*ab*)*, seperated by whitespace.
if it fits that regular expression, it'll print accepted, if it doesn't, it'll print rejected, and it'll ignore whitespace.

the command flex <filename> will generate a file called lex.yy.c that will execute the regular epxressions you described. I'll copy/paste a copy of the lex.yy.c file for this example at the end, 'cuz it's kinda long.

lex.yy.c is compiled with the command gcc lex.yy.c -ll
the -ll flag tells it to use the lex library (that's where main() is!!).
with a little file redirection, we have a working string recognizer!

here's my input file(lex1.asc):
Code:
bbaa aaabba
babbbaaaa       abbaabbaa bb
ababbbaab babbb abababbbbbaa
bbbbbbaaabb
here's the command to run it after it's been compiled:
./a.out < lex1.asc

and here's the output:
Code:
bbaa reject
aaabba reject
babbbaaaa accept
abbaabbaa accept
bb reject
ababbbaab reject
babbb accept
abababbbbbaa accept
bbbbbbaaabb accept
here's that lex.yy.c code
Code:
/* A lexical scanner generated by flex */

I like how flex and bison both have the same picture of the bull as a mascot.

For education purposes... dare I suggest ISETL?

Some professors can be real GNU whores. Use a sledhammer instead of q-tip (but it's the latest version sledgehammer!!!! - says the professors)

kel: this particular professor is a windows whore, who doesn't know what GNU really IS. he's like "Lex is soo cool! it writes C code for you! let's all do Lex!" and then it's like "Gui's are so cool! they're purdy! let's all use BorlandC++ builder!"
He's more attracted to shiney objects than I am! *rolleyes*

cheerios: I just wanted to say that you've absolutely made my day. Recently my mentor in the CS wing tasked me with a large undertaking, and I had to learn lex and yacc (or flex and bison, whichever). Your writeup was very useful!
