What do you mean exactly by "using it over the LAN?" There are different ways to use a webcam, but I don't think any are used strictly over a LAN. You could download a webcam messaging service like Eyeball Chat (http://www.eyeballchat.com) or Yahoo! Messenger (http://www.yahoo.com). I've found out through experience that Eyeball Chat works the best with webcams. It's also a great way to send files to people that have firewall issues over AIM and Yahoo!. Just remember that in order for someone to see through your webcam, they have to have the program installed as well.

Windows XP has a webcam program built in, but I don't think it's possible to share it over a LAN, or how that would work even if it were possible. The XP program does take fairly decent pictures though. Good luck!

You could use ICUII or NetMeeting and just specify the LAN IP when you connect to the other person.

Yeah, those would work too. I was gonna mention NetMeeting, but I figured the school would have it disabled or the ports fucked that enable it. At my college NetMeeting is 100% fucked; it's not even supported anymore. Nothing works with it at all. That's when I started digging for webcam programs that work good!

Sorry, I don't know much about the cams that are the best. I'm using an old Intel cam that came with my friend's PC. It has the best quality image I've ever seen from a webcam, but it doesn't take movies or do anything fancy.

Windows Media Encoder: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...7/encoder.aspx

It works really well for global webcamming. Any number of people can see your feed at once, there's no special programs required to view it (just Windows Media Player or Winamp...something default) , and it allows audio. Just give people the IP and port, and they can put that into their favorite media player and it should work just fine.

I have used this personally. If you'd like assistance, just ask.

Also, I use this webcam:

It's dirt cheap and works really well. It's actually DESIGNED for laptops.

You can do that with Windows Media Encoder. Just set the input file to an mp3, or set the audio to play whatever your soundcard outputs if you want people to hear you speaking AND music. whatever you want.
