wont turn on right
 

i go 2 turn my comp on 2 day and i get this blue screen right after windows xp screen pops up and it has white letters saying unmounted boot volume.....it says removing all new software/hardware using safe mode..in safe mode i get same error and wont let me get into windows 2 remove anything.....of caurse i did not add anything.......pls help.....i need my comp !!!

Well, digging into my ntfs books I found this...<i>In addition to (or in place of) a drive letter, you can assign one or more drive paths to a primary partition, a logical drive, or a simple volume on a dynamic disk. Assigning a drive path creates a mounted volume, which appears as a folder within an NTFS- formatted drive that has a letter assigned to it....</i>.

Does "my computer" show a new drive? Whoops, I suppose you would know that if you could get past the bsod.

Do an F8 (safe mode) of course you have been there, and go to "help and support" after you access the "start" menu once XP loads in safe mode.

Go to "help and support", wait for it to load, might take a few seconds, select a restore point from a few days ago, and go with that.


Sounds like your machine doesn't understand which drive to look at when it is looking for info since the drive it wants has been "dismounted:". Partition Magic did that to me once.

I hope this helps, but, over the phone\net troubleshooting gets goofy and I am sure folks with much more smarts than me can hook you up. Just trying to help out a brother.

I think he said he can't even get into Windows at all. :( I have no idea what would cause this, but it sure as hell doesn't sound good. Good luck fixing it though.

BTW, chkdsk will dismount a drive, but, I have found it always asks before doing so.

Whatever.

You can access a restore point using F8.

You have to get into Safe Mode to access the restore point.

He can't get into Windows or Safe Mode.

Point taken Lasereth. I was grasping at straws to save the system. Seems like last resort reinstall now. Hope you backed up, and backed up often.

well, i work for my school's I.T. dept and we had this problem with a bunch of Fujitsu drives that i believe are being recalled. if its a fujitsu, the problem may not be able to be resolved and you'll be best off calling the manufacturer. but, as all the other posters can attest to... there are a lot of reasons why this could be.

i dont think it is a format issue (yet) someone had something similar to this a while back i know and i used my xp disk to fix it by booting from the cd and going into the repair and recovery console i believe but i do not exactly remember what i typed at the command prompt but it does a disk check and fixes some errors depending on what commands you put in, maybe someone can elaborate or helpp out more to prevent a format from being done if you can avoid it

might be /chkdisk -r -p if i recall correctly

but boot from windows cd then there should be a repair and recover option or something to that effect then you are dumped at a command prompt i think that works

I worked in a PC repair shop over the summer and I got one system with this exact problem. Unfortunately I cannot remember exactly what I did to fix it. I *think* we did what Montana noted, using the restore utility on the CD rom, but I dont remember exactly.

asked a friend and he told me 2 load it into my other comp as a slave drive turn computer on and do scan disk...did it....put it back in main comp and its all fixed up

Try this if you can get to an internet connection and a CD burner somewhere. PE Builder is a bootable CD you create with your WinXP installation disk and the program from the site. With the program you create a quick and dirty WinXP environment booted from the CD, and you can replace files in an Explorer environment -- at the very least you can retrieve data files before you reinstall. I find new uses for this progam all the time
