Multiple Downloading
Greetings All,
I have a DSL line but I can download one or two things at a time. I right click on something and pick "Save Target As..." but I can get only one or two things to download simultaneously. Is there a way to change this? Thanks and cheers.

It is a built-in feature with Internet Explorer.
Two options that you could utilize to download more at one time. 1. A download manager. I personally use Internet Download Manager. 2. An edit to your system registry. http://puzzled.sourceforge.net/fdemers/IELimit_e.html |

go get download accelerator plus:
http://www.speedbit.com/ IMO it is the best download manager. has lots of features, but its still basic. It is good to schedule your downloads with it... just let it run at night |

DAP stinks, as does Internet Download Manger (sorry guys, i've used them before, and I really don't like them)
My favorite - http://www.flashget.com FLASHGET!!! Strongest download manager I've ever used. Most downloaders, when they split files, do not reuse connections when they finish a part. Flashget reuses the connection, so as each part finishes it splits the file even more so you always have the most connections to a site. (This is a good thing) Only downsides of Flashget - It is a really great program, but for newbies it can seem a bit weird. It passes after a day, trust me. Its not freeware, but you don't have to pay for it either. Just put up with an ad, or you can just put up with ONE dialog box when you start it up. Thats it.

There is registry setting for IE that can increase the number of concurrent downloads. I don't recall the details but I first saw the post on TFP. I'm sure the MS KnowledgeBase (support.microsoft.com) will have something on it.

I run an FTP server and I hate when people with download managers hit my server. I ban them when I see them because they take up too many connections.
Adjusting the registry settings will allow you to adjust your amount of d/ls and of course it splits up your bandwidth accordingly.

If you have problems with multiple connections per user, just limit the number of connections per ip/user, theres probably people doing that you miss now and again, why allow it, any decent ftp server will let you do it and set different rules for users or groups. Typically the rules of the internet are if it can be abused it will be abused.
I think download managers are better if they aren't abused on ftp servers that allow abuse, since they have recovery options , IE doesn't, flashget has automatic alternative mirrors to help spread the load, and it can be throttled , IE can't. the throttling and limiting can all be enforced by the ftp server , but they certainly can't in IE. I've also found that since it alwas puts it into a downloaded sorted folder for me, i can find the thing i downloaded easier, previously i would redownload a file rather than search for it locally Also a vote for flashget i think its great. |
