a question about celerons

hi, im thinking of upgrading my PIII 930 MHz to like a celeron (PIII based) 1.2 GHz.

so can i run a celeron on my comp or do I have to buy another PIII?

The_Dude 10-29-2003 05:35 PM

depends on your motherboard.

which mobo are you running?

Lasereth 10-29-2003 05:39 PM

Yeah, we gotta know the motherboard model before anything can be said.

that upgrade probably isnt much, because celerys are much slower than equivalent Pentiums because they lack the cache.

That would Not be a worthy upgrade. Celerons have half the caxhe as the P3 equivilant. You should look more at RAM and your vid card as upgrade options.

Celerons cant handle multimedia, they crash a lot more than PIIIs and they arent a lot cheaper than Athlons. You would be surprised how much difference more RAM and a better video card will make to the overall performance of your system.

True, but the newer Celerons have the same L2 cache as the old PIII so you will probably gain some speed with this upgrade.

celeron

That would Not be a worthy upgrade. Celerons have half the caxhe as the P3 equivilant. You should look more at RAM and your vid card as upgrade options. . Spend a few dollars more (Oh yeah, Clint Eastwood. Remember that one?) and get a nicer cpu and mboard.

With the pennies you saved by getting the Celeron, you can afford crying towels when you see how much slower it is.

The performance gain with the onboard cache is very noticeable. Ask anyone with an Athlon XP vs Athlon XP Barton! Or just ask yourself why Celerons (Durons) are not very popular.

Bang for the buck? AMD.

Celeron or Pentium? Get the Pentium you can afford. The cost of upgrading your mboard, ram, cpu is far outwieghed by the difference in apps that run, vids that run, music that runs, as opposed to bottlenecks created by the limited capabilities of the Celeron or Duron.

If all you do is email, Celeron. Anything more? AMD or Pentium.

Just my thoughts.

oh ok, thanks for the replies
well I found out I cant run most celerons anyway, I have a 133MHz fsb. and like a PIII over a gigahertz costs alot, so ill go with upgrading my ram
btw I tried installing a video card, and my crappy no0bproof HP didnt work with it

Get a newer p3, and overclock it.... :D or just do a gigantic upgrade :P

HP motherboards are made to make people cry.. Actualy the entire systems are made that way. I swear they have a monkey designing the layouts.. If you get the board to accept new hardware, the powersupply will cook and you'll have to replace it in a month.. Asus.. get an Asus

That "upgrade" would probably really be a degrade. Good that you're not bothering with it. More RAM is always useful, unless you've already got 512mb or more.

Celeron 1.2s have 256k of cache. I've got one overclocked to 1.5ghz ;)
