hey, i've been using my XP home box but i cant get nmap to run on it

but it runs just fine on all my unix and linux boxes so ne one got any ideas, i'm stumpped

NMap was first written as a UNIX app, so the primary download on the website is a gzipped tarball for UNIX systems.

However, you can also compile a Windows version from that by reading the "README-WIN32" file.

What specific errors are you getting? The downloads page has a few ideas on how to fix things, as well as a pre-compiled binary download for the Windows command line version.

I downloaded the pre-compiled binary and it functioned, and then I also tried the Win32 instructions with the tarballed souce, and it also functioned.

I'm using Visual Studio .NET 2003 to compile, for reference.

Make sure you first install winpcap as nmap uses its drivers. And, as Pragma says, make sure you're using the Win32 nmap (zipfile).

Flashing lights and alarms are going off in my head right now.

What are you planning on using nmap for, on a Windows box, that you couldn't do with a linux box?

seretogis - how about not having to reboot after using Win32 apps?

Seriously, though; I have to use Win32 a lot (at least until I find a WINE that does it for me), and while Linux is only a reboot away I find there's a lot you can achieve with Windows - a lot of the decent apps have been ported to it and are very usable...

And yes, I'm aware of the irony of saying Windows is a disadvantage because of the lack of Linux apps ported to it
