Linux, kernel 2.6.0

Quick stats of my system at the moment:
Hostname: ghreen - OS: Linux 2.6.0-test9.ghreen-meff1/i686 - CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 (2200.496 MHz) - Processes: 147 - Uptime: 9h 54m - Load Average: 0.24 - Memory Usage: 223.51MB/502.30MB (44.50%) - Disk Usage: 26.21GB/232.97GB (11.25%)

Being a avid nix and Debian users for years, after hearing that test10 would probably be the last test before the final release of 2.6.0, I got myself test9 and sat down for an hour or so getting my system all ready, and was ready to start my 2.6.0 test running.

Booted up flawlessly, and I must say, the difference in latency and general speed is quite big. I am very impressed. X11R6 is much more responsive, and the preempt patch from RML seems to be working great!

There is a new compiling system that is very clean and lets you know everything that is going on. I thought it was pretty cool, much better than just showing the standard gcc commands on the screen. This is a little feature but it is cool nontheless.

So far I've been running awhile, and even doing some 3D stuff with patched nVidia drivers for my graphics card. Seems pretty damn stable so far...

I encourage anyone that runs Linux and wants to help out with the bug-tagging to give it a ride.. And, let us know here what your experience is/was like.

Discuss. :)

sweet! I'm really looking forward to 2.6.0! Unfortunately, I can't install it until I get my internet connection back :( Please keep us updated an anything else cool you notice!

I'll probably wait on 2.6 until I build a new AMD Athlon 64FX box next spring. From what I have heard for the past couple of months 2.6 is very impressive and I am looking forward to it.

I think I'll go to 2.6 soon.. but once I have a better ISP.

I think Redhat is going to release RedHat X (or Fedora Project .9 or something like that.. they changed the names all around) in early Nov, and that's based on 2.6.

waiting on the redhat release as well...

would like to see the new kernel though, sounds like a winner

Very good read on basically everything happening in 2.6.0 .. take a look!

As I forgot to say, if you're not runnig x86, forget updating to 2.6.0 right now, as Linus' freeze is directly for getting x86 stable enough for a release.

No, Linus does not just care about x86, but there is a big problem in the community of the kernel where other architecture developers keep their own tree up to right before a version is released, and this is kind of hard to merge in at the last minute.. I suspect if you want to run other than x86 to wait till a few versions after the final 2.6.0

As far as you RedHat guys, its fairly simple from what I've read to upgrade. The binaries in those dists actually already support 2.6.0.

Do a google on it :)

numist 10-26-2003 02:24 PM

they do already support it, and you can download the update and it will install itself through up2date, I believe, but Im waiting for next release of redhat itself before I try it, Im sure some things will be rewritten given the kernel.

[edit]whoa, thats a woozy of a page, but it looks like some great improvements, I dont have to recompile now to mount NTFS -rw![/edit]
