WEIRD.
i had a 56k modem and i just got cable modem. so i decided to take out the useless 56k. when i got to windows, i put in my password and as soon as the windows startup sound started, my computer crashed. i tried in safe mode and it worked. so i know that somehow, my sound card and my 56k modem are linked.
i took out my sound card, put it in the modems pci slot and rebooted. I was able to log in and go in windows but now i didnt have any sounds. i checked the drivers and they where gone. i tried to reinstall the sound card drivers but nothing worked. now i put everything back the was it was. reinstalled the drivers and its all good but i'm stuck with a stupid 56k modem! i there a was to get rid of the modem while keeping the sound and not crashing all the time?

disable the modem in the device manager. but why are you so keen to get rid of it? i think that removing one pci device that's not even being used isn't going to have that much effect on the computer's performance.
there might be some way to disable its pci slot in the bios settings check the irq assignments for all your devices. you might try moving the sound card around until it's not sharing an irq with anything else just throwing ideas out there... :-) |

put everything back in, go to the device manager
control panel>system>hardware tab>device manager locate the modem card and right click on it, click uninstall shut down your system and remove the card. and that should do it.
