Burned movies on your DVD player?

I recently found, by accident, that I could burn a movie disk and watch the movies on my televison. The problem I'm having is that the dvd player only recognizes like 4 out of the ten things that are on there. They're all the same file type so I don't understand whats going on. Please help, any info would be appreciated.

What file type are there movies? .avi? .mpg? Are the codecs required for these movies the same?

Try checking your DVD player manufacturer's site if you haven't done so already.
