running a proxy on my home computer?
I was wondering if someone could give me advice on running a proxy on my home system. I have a decent connection with static ip. I was wanting to connect to my home computer from work, and use it to browse the internet (to bypass the chaperone program at work). Any advice or links to programs/tutorials would be greatly appreciated.
At home I have Win XP Pro, and at work I am on Win 2000. |

A few ideas:
-- Try www.anonymizer.com from work -- If running XP Pro at home, connect to it using the Remote Desktop Connection client and run IE from your home desktop -- Run a VNC server (www.tightvnc.com) at home and connect from work via the vncviewer app - this works like the above RDP solution Don't forget to open the necessary ports on your home firewall. RDP is 3389 and the VNC docs should tell you those port numbers. You don't mention what sites you're trying to cnnect to, but your statement "to bypass the chaperone program at work" might lead me to believe they don't want you surfing anywhere you feel like. Company policy - love it or hate it - it's the desire of who writes your paycheck.

I think you may have misread my post. I didn't complain anywhere in there, I just asked for suggestions to get around it. I am a student of CS, and the IT guys are always joking with me about how they are disappointed in the fact I haven't gotten around their proxy server. Also my connection is open to most sites(I can browse TFP at work), it just blocks a few, and sometimes for no reason. This isn't one of them, but for example - It will let me browse TFP, but then I go to some news site and it blocks it saying its porn. Thanks rubicon and yangwar for the suggestions. |
