Restrictions in IE6

This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

Ok, this is driving fucking nuts. I get this message whenever I try to go into IE6 Tools>Internet Options. I am the system administrator on this computer. I have set zero restrictions on this computer. but yet it won't allow me access to my internet options. I've been to User Accounts and confirmed that I am in fact the Administrator and that no restrictions have been put onto my account. But yet, I can't make this change. Anybody have a clue?

Win XP home
Pentium 4 2.56gig
512mb ram

If you think you might have a virus, go HERE
It is a free online virus checker, that will clean the files too. It is pretty known and popular version by Trendmicro. Hope this helps.

My comp is locked down pretty tight. Zone Alarm Pro, Norton Antivirus and spybot are all updated and no problems reported.

If you know you're getting annoying, why do it? You make other people who like to recommend Mozilla WHEN THE TIME IS APPROPRIATE - such as myself - look bad.

Anyway Wile_E, the best I can think of is also a virus of some sort. It could be one that blocks out AV software. I honestly can't think of any reason it wouldn't let you get in there since your the administrator already.

Have you tried logging in as "Administrator?"

There is no other option to log onto this computer with. I only have the one account setup. If I log out and go back to the main log in page, Only one option exists, me. I've scanned my system and its clean. Unless a virus disabled it previously, its not a viral problem that I can tell.

Someone had mentioned changing something in the registry to solve this. Any thoughts on how to do such a thing?

there is a default Administrator account put in when winXP is installed. If you use the pretty login screen, hold Alt-Ctrl-Del until the old school login dialog appears, then type administrator as user, and whatever pass you gave it on install as password. That's the only way to know for sure.

have you tried poking around in the 'Group Policy' settings?

there's boatloads of things that can be configured in there, this should be one of them.
(doesn't answer 'how the hell did this happen' problem, but...)

start ->run -> gpedit.msc
(i'm runnin Pro version, but i *hope* this is also in Home)

Ok, it won't allow me to enter the administrator login via the 'old school' log in. Says its restricted. So this problem is a bit more global than just IE6. Thanx SiN, but its not the same in home.

If I were to reinstall IE6, would it correct the issue? Or would the restriction still be in place?

there is some program that has a option to lock ppl out of internet options so that other users can not use them, i don't remeber if it was a tweaking program norton or a firewall but i know i hit an option to remove access to this too once and found myself with the same message

this is just a shot in the dark, but did you check the boxes that locks IE in spybot???? it's supposed to lock your internet options to prevent user changes. it's in the "immunization" settings. if this is the case, uncheck the boxes and you should be okay.

like i said... just a shot in the dark.
