Make problem for Linux

Right now, I'm trying to install the SVGA lib's in my up-to-date Libranet computer running on a 400 mhz I believe AMD processor with 128 ram. My issue is...if I have something taking up the full processor load, it'll kick me out of my client, or crap out on the make. What i was wondering is if I'm probably having a hardware issue, or is it something to do with Libranet. Another question is is there a way to pause a make so that it'll let the CPU not process anything for a second, then keep on going?

Some background info on my computer also might want to be given. About a year ago, I had Windows on my computer. All was good for awhile till I installed a Radeon video card with the TV out for it. Well, one day, my monitor craps the bed, and I use my TV for quite awhile. Eventually, I get back home from school and start using a new monitor and when I start with the new monitor, I get a nice blue screen on startup. After much testing and stuff, I decide to reinstall windows. So, I try to install Windows 98 SE. Get to part of the install where it detects hardware. Blue screen. I remove a piece of hardware, try it again after fdisking and reformating the drive. Get's past the hardware detection. Gets to the installing...blue screen. Talk with one of my friends, he suggests Win 2000. He gives me a copy to try...try it out, blue screen. This point, I'm getting rather pissed. He mentions trying Red Hat 9.0. I decide why the hell not. I put that in, and it goes in fine and dandy. Eventually I get tired of Red Hat because of dependancy hell. I go to Libranet for apt-get on the suggestion of a friend. I am able to put that in fine.
My thought is now that I might have a hardware issue but I have no idea what it might be.

So anyway, back to my original question...
Is there a way to pause make in the middle of compiling, and anyone have any idea wtf is wrong with my computer??
Thanks and sorry for the long post...

What version of Libranet? I'm using 2.8.1 (just installed), and I have no problems at all. I am using an Nvidia card; that's very linux-friendly, so that may be part of your problem. You might want to do any of your "make" processes at a CLI; that way you'll be using less memory to support a graphical desktop, and have more resources to dedicate to processes; I'd add as much RAM as you can afford, I'm using 1024 Mb of PC 133; there's no substitute for RAM and you can't have too much.

I don't think it's ram, unless there's somethin wrong with a small part of it, but I doubt that too. If there was a problem with it, I bet my computer would restart, not kick me outta my account
