I remember seeing this petiton long ago.... If I remember correctly, the SSSCA is what is now the DMCA. I think that the SSSCA stepped on too many consumer rights and they "watered" it down to become the DMCA, but either my memory is fuzzy, or I am completely wrong and this is actually a new bill. It is hard to tell since all the news about this bill seems to be from 1-2 years ago, and anything more recent might just be stuck in congress.

no, the SSSCA turned into the "Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act" (CBDTPA) and is mostly dead.

Basically, as i understand it, the govt is exploring options or ways they can install technology into a computer so they can monitor things like digital copyrights, user agreements, etc. Basically, they want to spy on you and make sure youre not pirating anything. And they want up to 7 years in jail or $500,000 fine for tampering w/ whatever theyre trying to install.

I'm sure it'll please everyone to know that Microsoft, Intel, and even AMD to a certain degree are cooperating with this bill, especially with the new Windows Longhorn coming out in a little while. I hope this gets annihilated soon. I honestly don't think there's anyway that it'll get past the idea stage, but it could. If it does, we're all fucked.

From some of the things ive been reading, it sounds like the bill isnt dead, it just got delayed w/ the whole 9/11, iraq, afghanistan wars etc. Im sure the idea wont go away, but we also arent doing our part in democracy if we dont at least voice our disapproval of the bill. (sorry for the politics, but i figured this was better suited here)

Hollings, the one of the guys who sponsered this is basicly a puppet of the media industry, and needs to be *ahem* removed from office, as do any other supporting this bulshit, or taking bribes. We need to take this country back from the large corparations, and return it to Joe Average, by any means nessacary. Our founding fathers must be rolling over in thier graves.....

Fucking thank god for linux and GNU... that's all I have to say.
As long as the demand for ungimped systems exists they will be there. Even if it comes to re-furbishing older hardware.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but... Fuck Telecom, they're scheming rip-offs bastards. The fact remains that our broadband network isn't up to scratch with the US but it's still relatively good.
