Laff @ work, NOT... Good Ol Microsoft..
Well,
We worked all night and all day to patch our vulnerable machines (MS03-039 and MS03-037, and one I can't remember). I'm getting used to these 50 hr work week with an extra 18hr shift thrown in the middle. Yesterday we got a nice shock. Let me set the scene, we are feeling all nice and comfy, y'know that fully patched fuzzy feeling. All of a sudden the calls come dripping in "network slow", "can't login", and "Word has hung".. Huh, all us techs ask "WTF!", "looks like a WINS problem, no name resolution".. "Whats going on with our DNS servers", how's our DC's.. etc, etc.. Turns out the WebClient service is running on all our XP boxes (only a few thousand or so), and everytime you try to access a network resource it goes off to try and find the holy grail or some such thing cause the fucker hasn't got a sense of direction and couldn't find it's pecker in its pants. Solution - DISABLE the WebClient service on every PC. Well, I didn't have fuck all to do today anyway, we'll ignore the lost couple of days because of MS required patching I had to do. ARGH! Anyway, rant over, but anyone else found this. Just wondering...and learning Linux :) PS: Thanks Bill, and a big up to your marketing team. |
Microsoft = Evil, they will take over your life and you will be forced to deal with them forever, now isn't that a scary thought !
