What is an IDX file?

Last night, my firewall blocked a port scan attack and traced it back to mp3.com. I talked to my dad and he said he thought it was a record company trying to check my pc for downloaded files. I only have about 50 songs on my computer and when I went to check exactly how many, I found many, many .idx files in the my music folder. I don't have any of the songs shared, in fact the only thing I share is episodes of Thundarr the Barbarian, one episode of Spongebob, and one skit of celebrity jeopardy. All of the idx files have the same time and date of last time modified and are numbered sequentially. What should I do? Should I be really concerned or is this just some crazy thing in windows that I shouldn't worry about?

IDX files are index files of some sort (as could be guessed by the extension). In general Index files can be deleted BUT the idx extension can also be used as a database. A quick search came across this link which might be what you are looking for.

Hope this helps

Here's a list of .idx extenions. It should be one of these programs.

Thanks for the links guys. One of the programs listed was Nero Burning Rom, which is what I have. I guess it was just an eerie coincidence. Incidentally, Mp3.com has tried the direct port scan 15 times on my pc in the last two weeks.

Freaky. My suggestion?

Don't use MP3.com anymore. (Yeah, you knew it was coming.)

Actually, I have never used mp3.com. That's what freaked me out the most. Specifically because it is owned by Universal Music Group. Needless to say, I am no longer sharing anything and have uninstalled my downloading program. Just laying low.
