Fix my computer and win a prize!

Well I'll start with what I have:
-AMD Athlon XP 2000+
-ECS K7S5A Pro SiS 735 Athlon(XP)Duron SktA DDR ATX Motherboard w/Audio, LAN Retail
-Abit Siluro GF4 Ti4200-8X AGP 8X 128MB DDR Video Card wTV-Out & DVI
-Western Digital Caviar WD800BB 80GB EIDE ATA100 7200RPM Hard Drive
-40 gig Western Digital Secondary HD
-1 stick of 512 DDR PNY memory
-1 stick of 256 DDR PNY memory
Windows 2000
Custom built by a friend.

Here's the situation. I recently moved from home(where my computer had no internet access) to Iowa State University where I am on the campus network. The first three weeks, my computer worked fine untill...

i decided to try out Bit Torrent(about five days ago). Here's the description of my problem:
First, my computer has problems starting up. If I power my system up normaly, my hard drives are not detected. If I hit the tinny reset button, my hard drives ARE detected. Then I comes to an error saying that S.M.A.R.T. is enabled, but not capiable and I must hit F1 to proceed. After this there is about a 50% chance that my computer will either finish starting up, or go to a Blue Screen Of Death saying that there is an Unknown Hard Error.

If it starts up, my computer will run smoothly for about twenty seconds, and then freeze for about twenty seconds. It seems to do it no matter how much stress I'm putting on my system (be it using AIM, Internet Explorer, Unreal 2, Media Player to watch a movie, or just sitting idlely at my desktop). After about twenty minutes of this, a dialog box comes up saying "Unknown Hard Error" and it shuts my computer down. I have uninstalled Bit Torrent and have tried opperating my computer disconnected from the network. Occasionaly there is a longer period of time between freezes, and twice since the problem occured, it has started up and run nornamly.

And so, if a solution exists that does not result in me having to reformat, I will be very appreciative. Thanks for reading through my poor typing and for any ideas you may have.

Someone will no doubt call me on this, but it sounds as though it may have been a hard drive sector failing.. i doubt bittorrent was the culprit in and of itself, perhaps in allocating a large chunk of space for your download it wrote on the bad sector, making things apparent...

honestly, one guess is as good as the next. you may want to run some system tests if you get a chance, stress test the hdd/processor/ram.

if anyones run into a similar problem, post away, as its evident that i, in fact, have got nuttin, as it were.

CAUSE
If you receive this error message, the file listed in the error message is corrupted.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, you need to either obtain a new copy of the file or reinstall Windows. If reinstallation fails to solve the problem, a hardware or network problem may exist.
MORE INFORMATION
The files that are checked for integrity when Windows starts are:

* All drivers (except those loaded by the system loader to boot the system)
* All dynamic link libraries (DLLs), including USER, GDI, SHELL, KERNEL, NTDLL, CRTDLL, etc.
* All DLLs loaded into the address space of the Windows server (video drivers, printer drivers, etc.)

This error message can be caused when you install an inappropriate driver for your hardware. For example, this error would appear if you installed a MIPS driver on an X86-based computer.

Note further that when BT begins a download, it writes an empty file that is the same size as the file you are attempting to download. If you went crazy and tried to download every pr0n movie you could find at the same time, you probably exceeded your hard drive capacity.

Go through your hard drive to find the partial files. This will be difficult, since they will appear to be the actual files. Good luck.

safe mode in win2k?

start with that, if it exists.

Figure out what file you need to replace, then copy it from your Windows disk. It will be on the disk with an extension composed of two letters and an underscore (ex: Explorer.ex_ or Win.in_) You'll need to boot into DOS from the CD to do this.

Copy it to the proper location on your drive, delete the corrupted file, then rename the file from the disk, giving it the proper extension.

S.M.A.R.T. is enable in the bios under the hard drive section disable that and i9t should help you out. smart is something that you dont want to enable. it eats up processing power and runs your harddrive alot longer then it needs to be run.
