Google search for...I think it's call stoik video converter.... or something like that. It's a handy little tool for converting video files just as you describe. Keep in mind that it is freeware, so sometimes it will crap out on you. (Just like all freeware does occasionally.) The nice thing is that even if it doesn't work, it doesn't corrupt your original file, so you at least have the original still in good shape.
