IE won't open new windows...ever!
This may sound like a "good" problem to have, but it's not. I have IE 6 on an XP machine, and all of a sudden, my IE will not open any new windows ever. It's almost as if I installed a pop-up blocker, but that's not the case. While it's nice when I visit an ad-clogged website, it SUCKS in other circumstances. For instance, if I'm visiting a site that uses Javascript to display jpg's or something.
I've tried everything I know how to do. I've completely erradicated my copies of Spybot and/or Adaware. I've even removed the google toolbar (the new one has a pop-up blocker that you can enable). Nothing seems to be working. In a normal case, I would uninstall and reinstall IE. But, with XP........well, you know. Just can't do it. Not that I'm aware of anyway. Anybody have any good ideas and/or links that may help me? Thanks in advance! |

I had a similar problem and remdied it by running msconfig and clearing the startup menu. I then found the problem by running each application by itself on startup. I found the problem was caused by msn messenger and after reinstalling it I havent had any problems since.

Interesting.
I tried the MSConfig solution. I disabled EVERYTHING in the startup column and restarted. Now, everything works except Javascript. For instance, if a link is to "Javascript:showimage (' filename'), nothing happens. The IE status bar says something along the lines of "Error in code". Any ideas? Is there a way to reinstall just javascript? |

If there's an error in code, that's a problem with the JS code (from the web site). It's likely not a problem w/ your JS interpreter.
- Have these links worked in the past? - You could try installing/seeing what happens on another browser. A free (and better than IE, IMHO) browser is Mozilla at www.mozilla.org . There's also Opera, Mozilla Firebird, and of course Netscape. - Do javascript popups work on other websites, or just that one? Hope these ideas help. If you don't want to be bothered w/ installing another broswer, you could give us a link to a page where it happens to you. I'm sure a few of us on here will check the link and see how their results go. |

I have found that you actually can uninstall and reinstall internet explorer in winxp, you need to go to add/remove programs, choose add/remove windows components (on the left pane), then you can uncheck internet explorer, anfter you apply the changes, just go back in and check internet explorer to reinstall it. I don't know if this will solve your problem but it could be worth a shot.
