Athlon 64: ClawHammer and Opteron!
Well, after years of waiting, it seems that AMD just released the nuclear bomb on the CPU industry.
Yes, that's a single-CPU Athlon 64 ClawHammer running at 2.1 GHz, OC'ed from 2.0 GHz. He's using a Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB). 24,000+ 3d Marks with a 2.1 GHz processor. http://www.tbreak.com/forums/showthr...threadid=19317 There's the starting thread. He posts more benchmark tests, including his Quake 3 FPS score of over 500 frames per second. Another company has benchmarked the Athlon 64 Opteron against dual Xeons, Pentium 4's, and Athlon XP 3200+. The SINGLE-CPU Opteron at 2.0 Ghz beat out the DUAL Xeons at 3.06 GHz EACH. http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1856&p=2 AMD has long since needed a revolution, and it seems that it's coming on September 23rd with the Athlon 64 release. The current Opteron that's out right now is $800. They'll definitely go down steadily as the Pentium 5's and late ClawHammers arrive, however. As usual, you gotta pay to kick ass. Hopefully they'll get one down to $200 or so. The lower-end Opterons (1.4 GHz) are about $200 right now, so maybe we can expect better prices in a month or two.

Nope, the thread mentions that the resolution was set at the default 1024x768 with all options at default.

Quick question(s): I was under the assumption that users needed a new OS to run with a 64-bit chip. THe jpeg from above looks like he/she is running XP. How is this possible? Or is what I heard about current OS's not being able to handle 64-bit chips incorrect? Just wondering

Yes, those new AMD CPUs do indeed seem to be ripping shit up. But those prices make baby jeebus cry .
MahlerIsGod: The Athlon 64 and Opteron are designed to do both 32 and 64-bit. It's quite spiffy.

What Rotten said. The scores are rumored to go up 30% when the 64-bit Windows debuts.
