WineX
Has anyone used this? I'd really like to convert my desktop (currently windows xp pro) to Linux, the only thing I need/use windows for anymore is playing games. Wondered if theres bad compatability issues or anything? I'm looking to play current games mostly, Battlefield 1942, Command and Conquer, Everquest.
I see on the site that they say these run, but I just want a users point of view, does it crash often? Lag horribly? Even work? Thanks in advance |
I run WineX on my desktop and on my laptop.
On my desktop I had WineX 2.2 I think that's the version. It ran WCIII great, I also tested Hitman, Alice, SoF2 and those ran fine too. Couldn't alt+tab tho, would screw up the graphics bad. I have 3.0 on my laptop and WCIII doesn't run on it. I haven't had a chance too see why yet and I haven't tried any other games. I heard that now you can alt+tab. I think it's worth the $5 a month for the min 3 months. |
I hear 3.0 works really well. You can go on their website and search for certain games, users post comments about how well the game works. I cancelled my subscription because I started using windows primarily again.. but now I'm using linux again so I'm thinking about buying it again. I know you can get the CVS version for free but I hear it doesn't work with copy protection, which is pretty much any new game that you legitimately buy :)

You could also just get a removable drive bay and second hard disk. One for Linux and one for Windows.
I'm a big advocate of the removable drive. It's easy and safe. Considering the low price of drives, you can get a new HDD and bay for $100. |
