question about getting hacked
the other day i got hacked by somebody.all of a sudden my printer fired up and it printed "We're watching you.." a minute late it printed "..and we know..". Ive since installed a heavy duty firewall. my question is was this a hacker,my network administrater(i'm at a college), or the RIAA/MPAA? i was downloading something off bittorrent at the time so i guess they could have gotten my ip address from there. any body know what happned?

I've actually did this to someone at my college. It's incredibly easy. I'll wager a hefty sum that your printer is shared on the network, and someone simply printed those documents on your printer over the network.
I made a page that said "bring this to blah blah dorm room blah if you get it" and about 3 hours later this guy comes in saying his printer turned on by itself. It's simple; just create a text document and choose a printer off of the network to print it. If your printer isn't shared, then it does sound like a hacker. -Lasereth

I remember when I was on a campus network a couple of years ago and my computer would occasionally flash a new hardware detected message for a shared printer it found on the network. I should have printed some gay porn on the guys printer just to mess with them.

You could use netsend to send a message to the entire network. And then ask who printed on your computer.
Of course you probably don't want everyone with Windows XP to have your IP Address, they might return the favor if you still have messenger installed.
