Suse Linux ISO

This isn't a warez request, it's legal to produce and distribute ISO's of Suse linux, the company that makes it chooses not to do it themselves in order to encourage people to buy boxed sets.

That being said, anyone know where I can find em?

I thought SUSE linux contained proprietary(sp?) code, not released under the GPL.
Therefore it would not be legal to reproduce them.

Most software within the distro is GPL-ed, and its source is distributed with the CD's. It would be legal to copy all that software except the prop. parts.

My $0.02

P.S. nope, I don't have any locations for you...

Why not use another distro? I have never used Suse myself, but RedHat is good for n00bs as there is rpms made for everything useful in the gnu world. If you want a real challenge and a good moderate/advanced user distro, go with gentoo. Takes a while to install, but the payoff is worth it.

Also, if I can'd download it, I won't use it, tho if I like it I will buy a box set if it's avail.

It's a common misconception that Suse professional includes software licensed from Sun. It simply isn't true, Suse bundles staroffice with a different package of suse that costs more and it is called appropriately enough Suse linux office desktop.

The only other license issue is YAST itself
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/8.1/COPYRIGHT.yast

Read the license, convince yourself. If you think I am skipping something then you can check out all the other licenses in that directory. There is legal precedent for this.

Some discussion of it here http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal.../msg00137.html

YAST itself is NOT released under GNU, but that means nothing because the licenses don't introduce different restrictions.

Suse used this as an excuse to stop offering .iso's for download. There, you learn something new everyday.

To put the final nail in the coffin we must wait till the legal department answers. Hopefully not in german.

If your not convinced... well delete the thread, TFP isn't a democracy

And as an afterthough... telling me to "google it" is equivalent to telling me take my problem, turn it sideways, and stick it my own arse... it isn't helpful...

I stand corrected, the YAST2 program is indeed free to be distributed...

Are you sure there are no other programs in there that are covered by non-free licenses...

Still, i do not have download locations, sorry

I've looked a bit myself for that, but was never able to find it. Ended up sticking with the 'ol download-install edition.

For future reference

To other people who have the same problem.

Discs are now for sale on ebay at the reasonable price of 6-12 dollars. Ebay doesn't show up on google and it is not sold on regular shopping sites.

A few months ago when I checked ebay there were no good deals for sale.
