Block the RIAA from scanning your computer
Interesting Article at TechTV:
http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/s...511270,00.html There is a free download to a product called Peer Guardian which will block probes from known RIAA IP's. It also constantly updates it's database with the latest IP's that they are using. Of course, none of us download media from P2P networks so we have nothing to worry about... |

Yea, but the problem is this: How do you know what people viewing your files are actual RIAA employees and how many are legitimate users?
Also, how can you tell the difference between an RIAA employee at home on his/her dialup connection at home writing down IPs and what you're sharing, vs. a legitimate user from the same dial-up ISP? It, at first, sounds like it's an instant cure -- then you stop and think about it and it doesn't really work.

Now you can block those pesky RIAA spies
http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/s...511270,00.html
Courtesy of Fark Dark Tip: Block the RIAA PeerGuardian is a free program that hides your file sharing from known RIAA informants. By Kevin Rose Printer-friendly format Email this story You have a firewall to keep out hackers, so why not have a firewall to keep out the RIAA? If you're running Windows, PeerGuardian does just that. Keep RIAA informants off your case Each time you launch PeerGuardian, it downloads the latest list of known RIAA informants and blocks them from connecting to your computer. The list contains hundreds of known IP-address ranges the RIAA has used to catch file swappers. Does PeerGuardian offer 100 percent protection? No. If an unknown RIAA informant sneaks through, you're still busted. Remember, the best way to not get caught is to not share pirated files. Support the musicians or movies you love and pick up a CD or DVD. Then share it. (Just kidding.) Grab PeerGuardian now. It's free! ----------------------------- Im not worried, but maybe some of you are.

This is useless. The RIAA probably hires college kids to nark off a shitload of kids in their college or whatnot. I mean, think about it, if you worked for the RIAA you'd know this and it's way too easy to get around. You're not protected unless you don't share anything at all and don't download anything.
It's impossible to make a truely 'anonymous' sharing network untill IPV6 comes into full swing. IIRC there is something in V6 that can have direct connections anonymously.

the RIAA makes me gag I hope they spend a billion dollars litigating and prosecuting harmless college students who can never pay them back a dime and file-sharing explodes despite all of it.
I use Peerguardian but I really don't hold out hope it is doing anything more than leech more resources from my computer. The only way to know for sure would be for some RIAA numbnuts to tell you otherwise. |
