Get the ACE Codec Pack with their Media Player Classic. It's basically their stripped down version of Windows Media Player 6.4 and it plays anything pratically. MPEGS, AVIs, WMVs, ASFs, ASXs, RMs, MOVs, etc.

Yeah, Media Player Classic. It's actually not by Microsoft, so you may need to do a little searching. It looks like WMP before the bloat-ness of versions 7 and up, and plays all of the most recent codecs without issue. It's tiny and clean and fast and I can't recommend it enough.

if you are having problems with windows media player, you can type "mplayer2" into your run command and load up the old version. I've noticed that it plays some movie files (read: poorly encoded pr0n) better than the current version of WMP.
I also highly recommend the kazaa-lite codec pack. I used to have my own codec pack that I created over years of trying to view pr0n encoded into weird formats, and the kazaa-lite codec pack is much better, plus its installer lets you choose what to install. www.kazaalite.tk

http://kazaalitekpp.com/ lists a bunch of media playing alternatives. You don't need Kazaa installed to use them. I'd give a direct link, but the site blocks it. Click on the "other downloads" link on the left-hand side.

You could try Jet audio - It plays audio and video formats and you can also use it to broadcast your own radio station. Check it out at http://www.jetaudio.com/

I do use WinDVD in place of the Windows MediaPlayer.
And listen to CD's with WinAmp 3.
