Sony Vaio TR1A
anyone had extensive access to one of these yet ?, i went to buy one tonite but earlier on we'd gone to office depot and bought the avertec mini laptop, but when i heard their return policy , told em to keep it, instead of refunding us, they charged us twice !
Which unfortunately i only found later when attmepting to buy the TR1A, but it gives me some time to research it a little its always hard to get a decent review on them, because they are cool looking and expensive so its hard for people to be objectiveabout it, especially if they paid for it. I realize its a light powered machine, but i want ultra portable (3.5lbs or less) and long battery life 3-6hrs) lots of memory 512MB and at least 802.11b internal, 30G hd min, i'm not worried about speed on it. The screen is unbelievably good I know that much Last edited by charliex; 08-31-2003 at 01:12 AM.. |

I saw one of these are Fry's Electronics and fell in love almost instantly. The thing is hardly any bigger than a small hardcover book, and yes indeed, the screen is brilliant. The built-in camera isn't of much better fare than, say, a pretty decent webcam, but what can ya really ask for at this price.
CNet.com has a review of this up too: http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_VAIO_PC...42.html?tag=tp "The VAIO TR1A is a tad too diminutive to serve as your primary computer, but it's an awesome supplementary system for frequent fliers." At any rate, it seems like something I would love to carry around the campus, but at $2k+ I can deal with the clunky reg-sized laptop . |

For another outlet for bleeding-edge computers, check out www.dynamism.com who stock the latest in ultraportable computers from Japan. They've had the Sony TR1/B for a while, along with some other interesting Japan-only models like the Sony Vaio U101 and the Samsung X10:

i finally managed to get hold of a few days ago, i almost went for the bluetooth variant but it was a lot more expensive for just BT and i have a mini usb BT adapter so its all good...
only thing thats been not great for me so far is the performance if the internal PCI wireless, it doesnt pick up real well, though i have an orinoco gold hanging of it at the moment that takes care of any problems there. otherwise i'm loving it, it weighs less than the battery of my sager/alienware laptop. |
