Wardriving

I was too lazy to do a search on this, so I thought I'd start a thread about my recently discovered hobby: Wardriving.
I live in a piss-ant, white-bread town in Montana and it's supprizing how many WiFi nets are broadcasting w/o any sort of protection or encryption. Your thoughts and input greatly appreciated.

Hey Man, My AP is broadcasting an SSID with my Phone number and the instructions to bring pizza. if any wardrivers pick up my ap here in Tucson, you must follow those directions. :)

Hah, that's about the most clever SSID I've seen - if I was in the area, I'd definitely order pizza & drop by.

War driving is a lot of fun, especially if you get a few friends together in different cars and try to see who can discover the most. It becomes almost like a city-wide scavenger hunt.

Definitely like Nhanced1's idea for an SSID. I'm not sure of how many folks here in my part of the country are aware of this activity :-( Montana is pretty much a technical wasteland, but that would be fun to get some folks together and have at it.

What's the point of WarDriving? I mean, everyone and their brother knows that there are unsecured wireless networks out there... you can even look up a database at NetStumbler.

Anyway, I think the real value of WarDriving is that it teaches you the dynamics of wireless ethernet, how to use directional antennae to get the best signal strength, and really separates the low-quality equipment from the higher end stuff.

When it comes down to it though, if I'm not traveling in another city, I'd much rather be surfing the net on my home LAN than in the back seat of a car, with 1/5 signal bars on a slow shared DSL connection.... just my 2c.

There's next to nothing here locally.

I use a TiBook and applicable soft.
