I'm having IE problems
Certain websites (yahoo, google and autotrader to name a few) won't display for me on certain days, it gives me the 'cannot display this page' thing.
It only happens on certain days, 3 out of 4 days it doesn't happen though. Also when it does happen, it happens with all the sites. What I mean is say yahoo is working today, then google and autotrader won't be working as well. I called the cox communications guy and he had me do somehting in internet options, I forget what now though. However this problem is still occuring and is a pain in the ass. Any suggestions are appreciated (Oh keep in mind I'm an idiot when it comes to computers) |
My first suggestion is to dump IE... go with either Opera (my choice) or Mozilla.
If that dosn't resolve your problem then I'd suggest you have another issue. Possibly with your ISP, connection or maybe even a virus. |
Maybe you're under a firewall?
Try doing this.. Tools > Internet Options > Connections > Lan Settings > If the Box that says "Use a proxy server for your lan" is checked, make sure you uncheck it. |
i'm thinking a firewall that's not doing what it's supposed to.
are you running a norton firewall? cuz i had that problem with certain sites. |
Jump ship to Mozilla. Best decision you could make.

Useful advice (not "switch your browser!"):
When you have issues accessing the webpage, do the following - open up a command prompt (Start->Run->"cmd") and type "tracert www.yahoo.com" or whatever the site is. See if that completes successfully. If it does, it means that the issue is not with your ISP. If it's not, I'm not entirely sure that the problem is. However, I've seen ISPs (including mine) have chronic network performance issues where routers consistently go down, day after day, denying access to large netblocks for hours at a time. That could be your issue. |
The biggest problem with connectivity is a bad DNS setting. Call your ISP and make sure your DNS settings are current.
Just so you know, every time you type in a URL like www.msnbc.com or whatever your computer has to go to the DNS server you have specified to find out what the IP address is to get there. If you are using an old DND server or one that is flakey it can keep you from getting where you want to go. Hope this helps... |
ten bucks says it is your ISP that is at fault. random inability to connect to major sites like Yahoo, google, etc. suggests that occasionally your ISP flakes out and you have no access to anything.
next time it happens, try this: see if you can get your email see if you can access a newsgroup try an instant messenger program if your ISP IS flaking out, you will not be able to access anything. if it is ONLY your browser that wont work, ONLY then would I worry about browser settings or the like. btw, it helps if you tell us HOW you are connecting. dialup? dsl? cable? |
This may sound stupid, but have you clicked Refresh once the error page comes up? I only ask because on Windows systems here (using IE), people tend to get an error right away when they try to load a page.. they click refresh and page displays fine.

This happens to me occasionally because, as i've stated before, 56k is the devil.
|
i say you try the switch to opera thing opera is sexy
|
I think its just a simple firewall problem... check your router firewall, windows firewall, or if you have another program running that may block certain ip's, dns, or port ranges. its not necessary to change browsers, besides IE is nice :D
