Buying a monitor

I'm planning on buying a pretty good video card and as I was looking for one I started to think my monitor just won't cut it anymore so I need some advice. I'm looking for a LCD monitor made for playing video games. Any suggestions?

a CRT. :D

my 2000fp has been great.

I run 1942 at 1600x1200 32 at about 60~80 fps.

People are picky when it comes to lcd's, and I will be honest I'm a little liberal about it.

Well is a CRT or an LCD better for gaming?

JStrider 08-06-2003 10:49 PM

crt is better for gaming... LCDs tend to have some streaking when stuff on the screen is moving fast... because each pixel doesnt change as fast as they do on a crt...

Get a 21" or 22" CRT for less than a crappier, smaller LCD.

Any suggestions of a 21" or 22" CRT?

Stay away from LCDs if you're a gamer. Typically, the max framerate is 60Hz, and you'll be hard pressed to find (and even harder to afford) any LCD that runs above 1024 * 768 resolution.

Is this CRT any good?

You can go wrong with ViewSonic. I have had a few of them and always been really really happy with them. Depending on how much cash you got, see if you can get one with a fine dot pitch. .25 is ok, but .21 is much better.

As I said, my lcd runs at 1600x1200 and any 17" and up lcd runs at 1280x1024.

You've have to see an lcd in person before you judge in my opinion.

doesn't matter the res, LCDs still have a lot more persistance than a CRT for gaming and high speed animation, plus the colour gamuts different

Konichiwaneko 08-07-2003 06:07 PM

I'll agree..it's very much each his own.

I had a 21" sony, but this 20" lcd is a lot better, and weights only 37lb's compared too 72lbs before.

21 inch monitor or bust... 22 inches is better... monitor is a big investment. It's something you'll be using in your next 2 or even three computers. Blow the cash... it's worth it.

LCDs are not good for gaming. All the reasons have been said. If you value convenience and are willing to pay for it then you should get and LCD because they are lighter... but it's just not worth it IMO

anybody have any recommendations for a 21"-22" crt monitor, i am also looking for one.

TIO 08-08-2003 12:37 AM

Konichiwaneko, what brand is that LCD? How much did it set you back? Save for specialty jobs, I've never seen an LCD with res like that.

ASsuming technology hasn't changed that much in the past month and a half, here's a great LCD article from Toms Hardware Guide: http://www.tomshardware.com/display/20030626/index.html

In terms of 22" monitors, go with a Mitsubishi (or a NEC for a cheaper version of the same monitor).

Sidenote, I'm sporting a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2060u.

Max Res is 2048x1536 @ 75 Hertz, I keep it at 1920x1440 for my desktop, but I often use the 2048 for an old online space shooter i play (subspace/continuum).

I just checked Mitsubishi's website, apparently my monitor is obselete and has been replaced with the 2070 which has 2048 at 85 hz. Yeah, that's pretty. ;)

Dell 2000fp, right now it's $829, I got it for $1100 1 1/2 years ago.

Great monitor.
