SCO Group suing over linux

http://www.itworld.com/Man/2685/030805scolicensing/

So will this affect the ongoing development of linux and all it's related software? Is the SCO Group full of it? What will I do when the DRM Nazi Palladium comes out?

As a home user this doesn't affect me directly. But if linux loses it's hold in the business market where all the real cash is made it will hurt all of the development and maintenance as a whole.

SUSE!

SCO group is full of it. They aren't releasing the info on what the IP violation is for the simple reason that the Linux crew would rip apart that code and rebuild it, without violating IP, in less than a week.

SCO is making a desperate attempt not to become obsolete and to regain money for shareholders. I don't think that anyone will take them seriously enough to drop Linux in a major way at the corporate level.

lol kel, you have nothing to fear. linux isn't going to disappear, it's like a fire, it's been started and will spread until it burns down everything in it's path. like pragma said, SCO is full of shit and making empty threats at linux vendors and commercial users. why would anybody pay $699 for something they can get for free. Worst case scenario... SCO wins, (highly unlikely), all the little linux hackers will come together and rewrite the kernel in less than a week.

lol, this news is a bit old, but there's nothing to worry about.

I read today that Red Hat is counter-suing SCO now too.

nah that was yesterday ;)

today SCO is "disapointed" Red Hat did not roll over for them. :D

This whole thing is BS. If SCO had a real good case they would not be acting in this manner. They are just pumping up their stock (SCOX) with lots of FUD as the tops cash out.

IBM will crush them, be sure of that.

I don't think with all of the crap SCO is saying, that they'll get any business. They are making more enemies then they are making friends. I don't think anyone is going to pay 699 for their license, or wait till a few months down the road where they need to pay like $1,200. They're trying to make themselves look big before they go to court when all of their claims will fall apart...hopefully.

Boner 08-06-2003 08:41 AM

The general consensus seems to be that SCO is trying to get IBM to buy them to get out of the suit.

IBM has been mysteriously quiet. I think IBM is being professional about the issue unlike SCO, and will "unleash the fury" when the time comes.

ratbastid 08-06-2003 05:52 PM

And today SCO is claiming licensing fees from embedded devices that <i>couldn't possibly</i> contain the alledgedly offending code.

Is somebody watching SCO's board and executives closely for sudden stock transactions? This thing smells like a pump-and-dump.

Pragma 08-06-2003 06:18 PM

Agreed, ratbastid. It seems to me like a bunch of the board members woke up and realized that SCO is useless and are trying to quickly jump up the stock price and bail.

Though I honestly never thought of it until you mentioned it, I can see how it makes sense.

Sure looks like it to me.

Today they announced their intention to require licenses from the government.

Now just sit back, grab some popcorn, and watch as the SEC prepares to kick their asses.

Pragma 08-07-2003 04:37 PM

And now IBM is suing SCO. This is getting pretty amusing.

My thoughts: SCO realizes that IBM won't stand for shit, the leaders jump ship, eventually get raped by lawsuits for trying to artificially inflate stock prices.

I sense a career as a psychic looming in your future.
