weird behavior

I doubt anyone can help, I just want to see if anyone has ideas...

I have a network at home with three comps. Two running windows and one on RedHat Linux 9.

I try to use ftp to connect to my server hosted in toronto. The FTP connect to the server, sits there at "sending login info" for two minutes before timing out.

My mail program does the same.

The hosting co has performed various tests and NO ONE else has the same issue connecting to the same ftp address.

It is not a software issue, because windows and linus systems do it.

It must be an issue with either my network, or my verizon DSL isp.

BUT, the wierd thing is... connecting via ftp or mail (mozilla mail/and tested using eudora) only has issues when connecting to my server... connecting to my school, or any other FTP site works FINE.

It's like my network only blocks login info to my hosting company...

any ideas?

One thing to try: Fire up a packet sniffer, launch your FTP client, and connect to your server in Toronto. Wait until it times out and then go look for traffic going back and forth between the two machines. One thing (if it'd been all FTP servers and just FTP) would be whether it was set to active or passive mode, but if you say you can access other servers, that's a little bit puzzling.

Have you always had this issue, or done anything recently to cause it?

One thing to test: Remove 2 of the machines from your network and set up the remaining one as the "only" system that the router knows about, making the router transparent to the setup (ie: forward everything straight to that machine).

If it works, you know that you've got a configuration issue in your router.

I am going to try hooking my laptop up to the dsl modem directly, bypassing the router.

I did a ping/traceroute as requested by my hosting guys, and the connections happen instantly. it's just the login info that takes forever...

ftp connection through the browser, POP mail conenction, and ftp through software stalls at the login info portion. It only recently started happening, I have not installed, changed, or uninstalled anything. (I used to work in tech support, so I know what subtle things can change everything).

It only happens to me, only happens with this one ftp/mail connection, EVERYTHING else works fine.

Hmm, well, let me know the results of what happens when you hook up to the modem directly. That sounds like it's the most likely issue, unless it's a configuration issue on the other end with your server. Can you access it from other locations (ie: a friend's house, at work, etc.) without problems?
