XP won't see my new hard-drive!! Please help!

I have a new WD 120g hard drive that I tried formatting using the xp disc. But then unfortunately it went ahead and continued to install windows on the new drive.

Now, I can boot into either drive and choose which operating system I want. But under the original windows install, I cannot see this new drive, even under disk management. Booting into the new drive and the new op. sys, I can see all the drives and it's all working fine.

How do I get the original windows to recognize this new drive???

I have the old drive set as master in the pin config, and the new drive is set to slave.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

it may be the file system.

are the 2 drives formatted the same?

Rococo 08-03-2003 12:54 PM

everything's ntfs.

Why did you format the new harddrive using the XP CD? I'd have said just plug it in, boot into Windows, and format it there.

I'd recommend booting up with a DOS or UNIX boot disk and completely wipe the new drive, then boot into Windows again.

I tried the xp cd because I'm on crack. Now that I'm fucked, I have another problem, I have no floppy drive. Any way I can make the boot disk using the zip drive or cd drive?

Pragma 08-03-2003 01:17 PM

Sure, download and burn any Linux or BSD distro to CD. Personally, I recommend for doing this the SuSE CDs that have the entire OS, already installed, on the CD so you can boot into Linux and then do work on your harddrives. I don't quite remember the name of it now, but you should be able to find it on their website.

Once you've got that up, you should be able to see both of your drives and format the appropriate one.

I'm not familiar with any of those programs. Could you provide a link for these?

Thanks!

I think something totally fucked is going on with my o.s. I tried hooking up my zip drive to the computer and same thing. It does not exist when I look for it windows. But It shows up fine in the bios as a secondary slave.

What the fuck's going on here????

Pragma 08-03-2003 01:55 PM

Try switching the second harddrive to a different position (ie: not Primary Slave). See if it shows up in Windows then.

Also: http://www.suse.com/us/private/downl...nux/index.html

Download the "SuSE Linux for i386 Live-Eval" ISO and boot off it.

From there, you should (hopefully) be able to see both drives.

when I clicked on the link forSuSE Linux for i386 Live-Eval, there were several folders. Should I download the 8.2 version?

Pragma 08-03-2003 02:19 PM

Yea, 8.2 is the latest I think. Go ahead and swipe that one.

Konichiwaneko 08-03-2003 04:37 PM

fdisk the second hd.

Like Pragma said.. try hooking the 'new' hard drive up as Secondary Master and leave the old hard drive as Primary Master... Id put any CDROMs as slaves on either chain... If it still doesnt see it.... it sounds like your 'old' hard drive's windows is screwin up... so Id boot into the 'new' hard drive, back up any data you need off the 'old' drive and format and re-install windows on the 'old' drive

For any new drive i buy, i always format it with Knoppix, then again in windows.

works every time.

windows likes to want to make volumes and all sorts of silly stuff with new drives.

nuke your second drive with f- disk.

Jolt 08-04-2003 08:49 PM

Does the second disk even appear in the Device Manager? If so, next call up Disk Management and see what that thinks is going on. If not, shut down, double-check your jumpers and position on the ribbon(slave in midde, master at end!), and try again.
Another consideration is the drive type may be set to 'none' in CMOS setup. You may need to change your settings there...

Rococo 08-04-2003 09:43 PM

I hooked up the new drive as secondary master, and it finally showed up it's formatted and everything's working fine. But just when you think it's over, I hooked my cd burner as primary slave and guess what? NO FUCKING BURNER!!!

Any ideas???

Rococo 08-04-2003 09:57 PM

ok, mystery solved. It turns out the ide channels in device manager had the slave part turned off. I set them back to autodetect and it's all fine now. Yay!

Whew...what a ride.
