Question for SBC Yahoo DSL Users

I just started my SBC Yahoo DSL service and everything is working fine but a few things:

1. When I start up MIE, it takes like 5-10 seconds of "detecting proxy settings" before it lets me surf. Can this be fixed? Cable Modem never did this.

2. The upload times (on FTP) max at about 15k/sec. Is this normal?

3. I can't get my newgroups client to work. I can download the new headers, but can't download the threads/binary attachments. I use Forte's "Free Agent". Any tips?

Thanks all.

2. Very normal. They cap the upload at that for basic DSL...

can't speak for your other problems but, do you have a router?

I don't have a router. Basic home computer setup, though I am suspicious of Dell....I think they sold me a used computer, since there are network neighborhoods on my computer that I didn't put there, but seem very specific.

Used or refurbished? I'm surprised you got something pre-installed like that even though you shouldn't have. As far as the proxy goes, check in IE: Tools, Options, Connections, LAN Settings and see if proxy is set to auto-configure/detect.

I have roadrunner and sbc dsl. sbcdsl is much crappier. try to switch to cable. dsl has slower upload speeds and they filter your newsgroups so you cant get the ones they dont like.

really? I used to have cable but we switched to DSL because it's almost $20 a month cheaper.

I emailed SBC DSL to see what the deal is. Filtering news groups is bullshit

I have had great success with dsl, never had any downtime. If any such disaster occurs I can switch over to dial up service. If you have a router, you don't even need the sbc software, since you can connect to the internet using your router. Before, it would take literally minutes connecting and doing its funky diagnostics, when I had the software on my comp. now w/out the software it takes less than a second.

SBC does place limits on USENET (that's a new change, IIRC), but I'm not sure what they really are.

Your upload is capped at 128 kbit stream, and it will stay that way unless you pay to have it tripled (which is pretty expensive).

They began filtering .binaries newsgroups to attempt to evade civil action for people downloading illegal materials. That's what I remember from the e-mail they sent out when they were going to start filtering them.

I've downloaded as fast as 120kps on my sbc dsl. They're telling me that if I switch to the new fiber lines they've put up since I got it 3yrs ago it will be faster

I use a dsl router so I don't have proxie problems.

Ah, yeah. It's the .binaries that's fucking me up then. That really sucks. How much is a router? Will the router bypass the newsgroup filters from SBC?

Nope, the filters are on their end. Do a web search and sign up for a newgroup service. You have to pay a monthly or per-gigabyte fee, but you get all the sites and is much more reliable.

detecting proxy settings means that Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings > Automatically Detect Settings = 1

I have SBC DSL at home and I get 153k down / 15k up. I've had 2 seperate instances where my service was down; only a few hours at a time, it was equipement issues at the Remote Terminal. I've been very happy with my service and the consistant 153k down is a wonderful. I don't like cable-modems in areas of dense population, you are at the mercy of all the other people on the trunk, which can be tricky at times.

This is kind of off Derwood's topic, but early this morning I was at home and I went to check if SBC Yahoo DSL is available in my area (rural Oklahoma). It said it was...but when I got to work and checked again, it said it wasn't. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I just call SBC and check that way?

It says detecting proxy settings because you're set up to auto-detect a proxy and you're not using one. It's an easy fix.

In Internet Exlporer, go to Tools>Internet Options. Pop over to the Connections tab and down at the bottom there's a button called LAN Settings.. press it and remove all the checks in the Window that comes up. Problem solved.

It bothers me slightly that I can recite all of this from memory. I've been doing tech support too damn long...

As to your newsreader, it's hard to say what's going on without actually seeing it. But then, I haven't been on usenet in years, so maybe someone with a bit more knowledge on the subject can give you something to go off of there.

EDIT - Well, that was weird. I only saw one other reply until I posted this one. Seeing as there's no new information here, you can safely disregard this post.

you've picked a crappy service my friend. As a former user of SBC/yahoo DSL I can tell you that your usenet is limited/censored. All multimedia (read that as large files) is automatically dropped. Most of your other binaries groups will work. Graphic images generally all populate while MP3 groups will give you about a 50% completion of postings.

uncheck your 'detect proxy settings', its not needed.

upload times will be mostly affected by your distance to the CO, though they are limited just like cable.....slower than downloads.

EWESER - Make the call. Then call back and ask someone else to confirm it. I was told by one person I could have DSL if I switched to SBC. I did and the day they switched my carriers, I got a call telling me I was too far from a remote connector or some sort thing. They can run a check on your line to see your exact distance from that thingymajig JUST to be sure you can truly get the service.

I have SBC dsl in SE Michigan. I've not noticed any censorship of usenet. Binairies seem all there.... or maybe I'm just not looking for the GOOD stuff?
