good cheap router

Hey... threeleggedfrog and I are moving off campus and getting cable... anyone know of at least a 3 port router that's cheap? (plug in for cable modem and at least 2 ethernet for our computers).

Linksys makes very good network hardware - I use it both at home and at work. They sell a "4 port cable/dsl router" for (I don't think) too much money. I don't have an exact price, though you can hit up buy.com or pricewatch for more information.

I really don't recommend D-Link hardware, but 3COM is good, though a bit pricey.

Typically, at least with the cable company that I'm going to be using, they'll provide a four port router. I dunno if it all fo them do it, but might want to ask.

$300 router is something you dont need.

Go to best buy: Get a Dlink 4-port router for 40-50 dollars.

I really don't recommend D-Link, if you've got some extra cash, go with Linksys. I know lots of people who've had issues with D-Link network hardware.

Heh...

Do I have the deal for you, nice high end router/switch for 25 dollars.

The manufacturer discontinued this model because it had too many features that no one used, and was thus was expensive to produce. They replaced it with a new "high end" model. They sell the old ones nice and cheap now.

This is the router you want ;-)

Edited for lack of coherence...

Not having cable or DSL, I can't say for sure, but kel's link does look pretty appealing. Worst case, you blow 25$ on something that doesn't do what you want - not the end of the world. But if it works as advertised? Damned good deal.

Yea, I'd be very surprised if it failed to work with MacOS, as its normally listed alongside UNIX and Windows as a NOS (Network Operating System).

Most likely, they only put in Windows out of laziness - chances are it's a web-based management suite, at which point anything with a web browser can configure it.

I have been using the router for a year, no problems

It's exactly what your looking for.
It's a full featured router/firewall like any other, it was recommended to me by someone else who has had it even longer, and they haven't had a problem with it either. The price is simply because it's an "old model" they are trying to get rid of and replace with a newer (cheaper to produce model).

It supports all the usual features, you can download the manual from Asante if you want to see.

I've gotta warn against going the Linksys route. I've had multiple Linksys devices fail on me. I always tell myself "never again" will I buy another Linksys device, but then end up doing it because they're cheaper than anything else. One of these days, I'll learn. Their tech-support is worthless. You can almost hear them flipping the laminated pages to answer even the most basic question. Any route other than Linksys will be good by comparison

I find that good and cheap tend to be mutually exclusive.

I can only imagine more so when you are discussing routers...

Very true, Mr Mephisto. Unfortunately (for those of us with tech support jobs or who volunteer to help others), people will go buy "El Cheapo Router" for 9.99$ and then immediately complain when it eventually goes wrong.

I've seen some really freaky issues with routers that have been traced back to faulty hardware or poor design on the part of the cheap hardware.

My advice (not necessarily to the original poster, but to anyone) is to seriously consider buying the more expensive hardware (as long as it's reputable brands: Cisco, Linksys, 3Com), as you've got to weigh cost vs. hassle.

Linksys has never let me, cheap and very reliable. Just dont get a wireless router from them, not worth it in my opinion.

The LinkSys wireless gear is actually quite good.

And LinkSys now belong to Cisco. You will only see their quality to continue to improve...
