I got new fans. Need new video card.
I've been hearing this strange sound when my computer starts up...it's sounds like something is struggling to spin up.
So, I opened up the case and determined it was a fan. They're only a year old, but they came with the case. So, I go to BestBuy (because they're the only place open after 8pm around here, not because it's my first choice) and I find, lo and behold, they are now carrying Antec fans. When they stopped carrying "Bob's cheap chinese fans, I dunno. So hey, anyway, Antec 80mm double ball bearing fans with or without blue LEDs are 12.99/ea. I've got (pre-new fans) one 80mm intake blowing over the WD800JB from the bottom front, and one 80mm exausting from about the middle of the case's back. Then there's the two 80mm fans on the PS. Everything always seems cool enough for me. Athlon 1600+ idle at 49C, full protien folding load, 59-63. Sys idle 39C to load 44C. I grab my handy can o' air, and blow out the case (you do that regularly, don't you?). Then I take my two new 80mm fans and I replace the intake and exaust with my new blue glowing fans (which matches the case insets, BTW). Still hear the groaning-moaning on startup. Damn. Now I really thought it was the exaust fan making the noise, but that obviously ain't it. Then something occurs to me.... The Radeon 7500 I've got poking along in there has a fan on the GPU, which I haven't even thought about 'till now. (I knew it wasn't the CPU, or northbridge fan, because the CPU fan is new, and the system fan is that Gigabyte 7VAX quality shiznit) I watch it at startup, and violia, it's struggling to spin up! THe culprit has been found. Test further, pull power off GPU fan, and the noise disappears. Power that fan on, it's back! We have our suspect! I took the GPU fan off, and blew the dust off it, but that didn't help. I did take one of my "old" 80mm fans and I added it to the exaust chores. Now I've got the LED 80mm intake, an LED 80mm exaust, a boring 80mm exaust right over that, and the PS fans exausting. That's a lot of air (and my cabling work is tight, the airflow in there is very good) through that case. Also, the new fans are quiter, and the temps...well they haven't really gone down much. That's okay with me, it just re-affirms my thought that I've got the airflow in there as good as it's going to get. That's a lot of typing to get to this point, thanks for sticking with me. I could just replace the GPU fan, but I don't want to. When I build the system I built a very strong foundation. The video card was an acknowledged, and planned, weak / cheap point. My birthday is coming up, and my finace has said she'll get me a new video card if I pick a few out (at varying price points) and give her the list. Her birthday is before mine, by 5 days, and we decided that up to $150 we would try and spend like amounts on each other. Assume I spend $150 on her, that means I get a $150 for a video card. I don't play any games on my computer. Sorry, I just suck that way. I do, do some scanning and then graphics editing. Photoshop and all that...so more speed here would be appreciated; but, that's more of a CPU dependant thing, sooo.... I'm thinking a GForce 4 Ti 4200 128mb would be a nice card. Maybe with some video capture or somthing, I will have wedding videos/pics to play with in the 7 weeks away future. I'd appreciate some help with this choice. I've already read all the Tomshardwareguide stuff, stuff on the TFP, etc, so I've got a good idea, but what do you think? While we're at it, how long do you think the 7500 will last with a weak fan? It's spinning, but not as fast as it should, I think. I do have a very strong, in my opinion, box: (I'm not really convinced it needs any upgrades other than the video card right now.) Gigabyte 7VAX / VIA KT 400 AMD Athlon XP 1600+ (not overc'd) 512mb DDR 333 WD800JB (2 partitions C (Freebird) & D (Snookums) 15.63 & 58.9 GB respectively) WD300BB (1 partition F (Wierdo) 27.95 GB (15 GB used) for video porn storage) Radeon 7500 64Mb--the subject of our replacement story. Lite-On LTR-40125S 40X burner and all that PHILIPS PCRW804 8x burnder and not all that I've got a KDS XFlat 19' monitor that I like very much A nice HP 2110v all-in-one that I just bought A pair of semi-decent sony speakers that I've had FOREVER. Open fire people.

Your 7500 will be fine, I've got one in my laptop (which gets very very hot) and not all 7500's even had a fan, so don't worry.
The GeForce4 Ti4200 you mentioned is a solid card, but if you're looking to do video capture you're best off with an ATI All-In-Wonder card. Hands down, ATI makes the best all around card that'll give you vid in and out. For your price point, an All-In-Wonder (AIW) 9000, 64 mb should do you just right. It'll give you a TV Tuner, as well as video in and TV out. |
