How do you Clean a Flat Panel Monitor?

Hey all,

I was wondering how you clean one of these? I got a dell recently with a flat panel, but dell did not send any info on how to clean the monitor's surface?

Right now i am using a feather duster to keep the dust off, but what can i use to actual clean it, if the need ever arises.

Thanks

DB

Glass cleaner should do the trick just fine.

word of warning: it is best to clean a monitor when it is turned OFF.

I use the towlette things that I use to clean my glasses, although LCDs dont seem to collect half as much dust as my old CRT.

If it is a glass covered flat panel, glass cleaner works just fine.

If it is a plastic-type (ala notebooks) then do NOT use anything with alcohol in it.

lightly damp a cloth with some water. that's it. i said "damp" there, not "soak"

Not sure if there is any truth to this, but I have heard that you should NOT use windex or other such products on monitors because the cleaner will remove the anti-glare coating from the glass.

badfish, its absolutely true, most glass cleaners contain ammonia which is nasty stuff and will take off the coating very quickly.

Amonia bad.

The stuff used to clean glasses is fine, or a damp cloth with a diluted dish-soap / water mixture.

I heard you are always supposed to apply the solution to the rag and not the screen or you'll get scratches--that's what I do and I haven't had any yet.

How about special TFT cleaning liquid, buyable at your better computer dealer? It's available, it's non-destructible, and it works.

YIKES!!! Do not use Windex!! You will strip off the anti-static coatings which will cause perminent damage to your monitor. TechTV recommeds that you use something like Klear Screen. I used just regular old Windex on my laptop once and now I have nasty streaks across the surface that never go away.

One part of my job is to keep computer equipment clean, including touch flat panels.

Use a glass cleaner with no ammonia, apply to a soft cloth, turn off the monitor and clean the glass as well as the outter plastic surfaces. Be sure it is dry before turning the monitor back on.

Cleaned 36 of them yesterday this way with no problems
