Car stereo speaker
If my rear speakers are a weird size (5.25"), would I be able to cut the area to fit 6x9 speakers? Or woudl that do too much damage or be bad?
|
There are plastic adapters you can buy to mount 6x9's in the back deck of most cars.......

Any other ideas?

Get out the dremmel perhaps?
I did that on my old '87 Z24 |
Or put the 6x9's in addition to your other speakers, maybe under the seats or some such thing.
Or splurge and go with some decent 5 1/4, and get some 6 or 8" woofers if you have a decent enough amp. Bass can be put anywhere (be it car or home stereos), and if you have decent speakers for the high and midrange your system should sound good. |
If you have access to a compressor, get a Nibbler tool to cut it out. It's around 30 dollars but well worth it. It makes cutting out the deck a 10 min. job. Just make sure that the speakers will clear everyting underneath (trunk resistance bars, framework).
or just get the 5X8's. Polk makes some good 5x8's. |
you can use adapter or just cut out the correct size, use a dremel tool or similiar cutter. get some cardboard and make a template and fit it to your speakers...THEN take it to the car and do the cutting.
|
or you can go super ghetto and get two mdf boxes for your 6x9s from radioshack. then you'll be one of those guys blasting treble with these two huge boxes sitting on the rear dash blocking almost all visibility
|
Okay, if you cut it out, will it be visible if you remove the 6x9s? If its hidden away, it might not be a bad idea. But why the 6x9s? Oval-shaped speakers break so many sound propagation rules... If they are your only speakers, i guess they'll do. But you should think about just getting the speakers in FRONT of you up to par and leave the rears alone for now. Or, just upgrade all four speakers (5.25) to something better than stock. Its an easy upgrade, can be done in an afternoon, and requires no cutting. If you want added bass, add a small 8" sub in the trunk. JL Audio makes a cool thing called a MicroSub and it would do a much, much better job than any 6x9.

depends completely on the make/model of the car. wouldnt hurt to pull the door panel off and see how much room you have around there... ive done it before, butits not easy. maybe the best idea would be to drop down to a 4" speaker, any aftermarket one should be better than what you've got in there now if you are using stock ones, and you should be able to install them fairly easily with a set of adapters that are available at any competent stereo shop. good luck

You would definatly need to watch out for wiring, and other obvious stuff you do not want to cut, not all cars have room for speakers, some have trucks where the spring mounts are too close to the area youd want to mount them, my advice is to crawl into your trunk, (hang a leg out so noone locks you in heheh) and look at the area, see what you think can be done. Sawz all's work very well for this kind of job
|
well, this operation will never come to be.
Just had to fix a lot in my car ($1600) so I do not have moeny to do speakers now. This sucks |
i have always prefered round speakers to oval ones, they are alot more rigid and produce a kittle cleaner sound.... if you wnat a little lower end bass responce go for a 8 and a small amp in the trunk....
|
i would just go for the nice 5 1/4, they have some decent drivers out there, even though you won't get the low end but then again its just a drop in, and you won't have to mod your car
