sound and video cards can't play nicely. help?

hey folks, i'm looking for a bit of help here. i've had this problem for a while now.

i've had this SBLive soundcard for about 4 years now. I don't know too much about it other than it says soundblaster Live on the card itself, and it looks kinda stylish being all black instead of green

i got a Radeon 9000 pro a few months ago and since then whenever I play UT it jumps around quite a bit. when i pull the soundcard out it seems to play fine. also when i play games like ut2k3, it loads a hell of a lot faster with the sb card out, and the onboard soundcard in use.

i have no problem using the onboard soundcard, infact it sounds quite good. but the thing is, i rip a lot of CDs. With the soundblaster card, i have a wire going from my LiteOn CDRW to my soundcard, that lets me play music cds, as well as rip them. but when i'm using the onboard sound, I can't rip or play cds.

do you guys know of any way that I can get the Radeon and SB cards to play nice together?
or, is there a way i can play and rip cds with the onboard sound card? i'd be more than happy with either solution. i just hate having to shut down and pull the card out and enable the onboard sound in the BIOS whenever i wanna play a game.

any help would be appriciated guys, as i've had this problem since i first got the video card.

here's the specs of my machine incase it helps.

it's an XP 1900+ on an ECS K7S5A board
512megs of DDR2100
LiteOn 40x12x48 CDRW with the Lineout that connects to the line in on the SB Card.

you should have a place to put that same wire on the motherboard.

maybe you have to remove jumpers (not sure bout that) but check the manual and see.

It may be a simple RAM issue. The vid and sound card are both using a bit of memory and don't forget that a game like UT2K3 uses a ton of memory. If you're OS is XP then you're really using a ton of memory. My system idles using about 360 megs of RAM and I have noticed that it peaks as high as 800 megs. I bet if I only had a stick of 512 in my PC I'd have those same problems. I would suggest buying another stick of 512. I'm only guessing. Maybe someone who really knows something will agree with me.

My Radeon 9700 AIW used to make peoples lips move after their voices while using the tv in the upper corner, like a bad Kung Fu movie. I thought it was my Sound Blaster Audigy 2. It was the ATI drivers. It took some time fixing the nonsense, but after playing with the Audigy drivers, THEN the ATI drivers, it worked. Update the Sound Blaster, THEN do the ATI drivers.

Now stuff looks nice after updating the drivers in the proper order.

However, Asian fight flick lips don't match what they say, but, that is just old Kung Fu.

there's no spot on the board to plug the audio line into.

i use windows 2000, and i've never had a problem with memory as of yet. UT (the original, which is what is causing me the most grief because it's the only game i really play) requires like 32megs of ram to play.

i've tried playing with the drivers before, but not really too extensivley. i'll give it another shot though.

thanks for the replies though fellas. anyone elses input would be more than welcome as well.

You might want to try and go into the Advanced Audio settings and disable any assiotion to 3d hardware support. All that does is causes the sound to become 3d if you have a 4 speaker setup. In your case I would imagen that correct sound would be more important then 3d sound

Also with your system you shouldn't be having any issues with RAM unless its gone bad. I played UT1 on my old P3 600 /w 256mb and it ran just fine.

Oh one more thing you could try, see if Environmental effects are enabled for UT, if they are turn them off. sometimes they like to cause a serious echo in HL so I donno what it could do in UT.

good idea. but i have a feeling it's an IRQ conflict. win2000 assigns them automatically.

but i'm going to try your ideas in the morning when i get up. it's a bit too late to be troubleshooting right now. thanks for the input though.
