Wireless network fun
I'm wireless on a few PCs/notebooks. Even the tivo is hooked up to the w-network now for scheduling recordings.
What else can I do? I thought some wireless cameras around the house might be fun. Any suggestions? How about wireless remote control and scheduling on interior/exterior lights? (Maybe I could run those with my Palm handheld, assuming I get a wireless card for it?) Last edited by pook; 07-24-2003 at 08:33 AM.. |

For the wireless remote control, why not just go with X10? It works pretty well, and isn't too expensive. Replace some of the light switches with X10 switches and put a light module inbetween the outlet and lamps. With one remote, or your computer, or a base station module, you can control any light in your house and even brighten/dim them (if they're not flourescent lights).

For home control, check out Home Automated Living at Lowes. Or click here: http://www.automatedliving.com/default.htm
That may give you some ideas. |

Just make sure that you've got it secured, at least with WEP, but if possible using IPSec or something similar. The last thing you want is for someone to either (a) steal your bandwidth or (b) trash your files.

If you want to control your lights and fans and what not, got to lutron and get their Radio Ra Line of switches and controlers, It's all wireless.
www.lutron.com/radiora/ If you have a large home a X10 system can become unreliable ( I'm speaking from experiance here). Any home larger than 2000 square feet should not use X10. I would get something a little better. OR if your REALLY serious about Home Automation and are willing to spend money on a custom designed system goto http://www.amx.com/solutions-commercial.asp

Especially when someone you know decides to start tinkering with it. Practical jokes are so easily played with stuff like this.
