war driving keeping it 45!
so for a laugh i thought i'd leave my laptop on with netstumbler from about the getty musuem in LA to my house in north hollywood, as soon as i switched it on 1 appeared, by the time i got home 20 mins later ( using freeway most of the way ) it had picked up 200+ wireless lans, with 80% of them with no WEP , though they may have other protection.
pretty amazing really, seemed mostly business with a few home users. |
I'm new to this WarDriving thing, is there an easy to use user guide to it? along with a way to plug my laptop into my car cig lighter lol so i dont run out of battery...

http://www.netstumbler.com has most everything you'd need.
orinoco cards are the best, but others work see the stumbler forums for which, other than that just run netstumbler and drive around, you don't need an external antenna but it helps. it'll list the available wireless network points etc. depends on your laptop, most have cig lighter adapters, simplest (but sometimes a bit more expensive) is to get a power inverter and plug your laptops brick into that. a gps is needed if you want to map out the area, radioshack(tandy) are having a closeout on the digitraverel gps for like $45 it works pretty good with a pocket pc, i am adapting mine for stumbling., otherwise you just wander around and note locations by hand. |

i didn't know tandy had been bought out in the uk, haven't been back in a while :)
i am still fiddling with my GPS unit, but once its done it'll be a semi decent GPS for mapping/wardriving for $45 if you can find them, and it works with a PPC. |
Found 20-some open AP's in Burlington, VT and one person with WEP enabled. All within a 1 mile radius of my school.
