dont use real player for anything it has always given me probs but I use both windows media player, quicktime, and some other I cant rember the name of and at least one of them take up the slack for real player. REal player gathers too much info and is too invasive for me to even try to use

RealPlayer is a complete PoS program. I refuse to let it, or any .rm/.ram files on my system.
but, to answer your question: it could be that if you have a firewall installed, but have not allowed realplayer to have access to the internet, it is freezing at that point. open the program by itself (ie without trying to play a video) and look around in the options. I seem to remember there was a setting you could click to prevent it from trying to access the internet. and no, I dont think there are any other programs that can play realplayer clips. but dont worry, it is rarely used by the file sharing community. it is mostly used for streaming video on websites. most users who do their own dvd ripping or vhs capturing put their work in the .mpg or .avi formats. RealPlayer SUX!
