I have a Westell dsl modem... uses WinPoEt software.. when i log on it says starting protection software..

does this have a built in fire wall or one that was installed .. the manual didnt say so.. but dont know..

and if when i connection the little connection popup says connected at 10.0 mbps

what does that mean?

sorry had dial up all my life.. seems a wonder that im done in 4 hours with what took me 2 days lol

10mbps is the conenction from your PC to the DSL modem, its way fast enough for DSL.

you could try a simple check like this one

If its a NAT based router you should be fine, your Pc's local IP address will be one of the non routable IP numbers, 10.0... 192.168.... etc
