Did you use the American Online software to download them?
ART image file format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Try using the AOL picture viewer to open them (and then save them as jpeg).

Like Laserth stated, you could right click on the picture and choose rename and if you see the file extension of .art, change it to .jpg or .gif . It will probably ask you "are you sure you want to change the extension, it might not work later", choose yes. If that works, then you are good to go.

Yeah, I'm not so sure about that from what I read in the Wiki link above. They're highly compressed in a proprietary format if they are indeed AOL .art files. IE can't even open them anymore. They will likely need to be converted using the AOL picture viewer.
However, I will say it's worth a try. It might be quicker to just rename them with .jpg.

Yeah - that's an old AOL format. If renaming the files won't work or you don't have the AOL viewer to do a "save as," just Google and download an image converter software. Graphic Workshop Professional is an old one I used to use to show my xxx image files as a slideshow years before Windows started doing it (and videos became so easy to find and download).
