There is this file that keeps popping up on my desktop. We delete it and it just keeps coming back. It doesnt have a name or extension, just this ~. Does anyone know what this is and how i can get rid of it?

i too have gotten that file a few times, it seems to be the address book, and it seems to be generated by outlook express for me, didn't really check into why, did a virus scan and it was clean and i got it on fresh installs of XP.
very odd after some more checking, it is a bug in OE, and it is the address book as i thought, we are awaiting a patch from MS I believe this patch caused it, check your IE see if its listed as a patch, though i dont recommend removing, it plus i think its a registry entry so it won't go away anyway. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...94/default.asp not sure if its been fixed yet. Its the address book backup, its going to the desktop ~ file instead of the correct backup, either delete it or if you want the backup to work move it too C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book using your login name as the filename ie charlie.wa~. |
You might get more responses and help if you would include your problem in the subject of your query. Try reposting with more info in the subject line.
Charliex seems to have helped you. Try using adaware to find out who put the tilde (~) on your machine. I use Outlook and have not had such a problem. |
Had it also...deleted a few times and it came back...I always download new patches and anything to do with security from microsoft, and I have not had it in over a month..I assumed it was a bug and one of the uploads took care of it.
