GPS Systems, teach me!

Ok, I'd like to buy my mom a GPS unit for Xmas. But I know nothing about them.
Anyone in TFP know what I should be looking for?
I figure since there's some on sale on new egg for black friday, now's a good time to get one.
Any brands I should look for?
Teach me!
And quickly, I have 15 hours to buy one, lol

I had a low end Nuvi and switched to a Tomtom. I like the Tomtom better.

You can check out the reviews on Amazon.com for diiferent brands and models.

I'll recommend a Nuvi 255 or 255W (widescreen). The 255w currently on sale on amazon (cheaper than the regular 255) and it's simple to use and it speaks the streets name when navigating you. My parents were really stubborn with the idea of trusting technology to navigate them at first... the Nuvi 255 I got for them changed their mind quickly and they have since become addicted. It's very parent friendly, no real skills required.

The 255 isn't packed with features... but it does what it's intended to very well - navigate you to a destination while speaking directions and street names.

If you are interested in getting something fancier, you can get ones with bluetooth, music playing ability and all sorts of awesome features.

some places are selling the 1490LMT for $199 which is a great price for a full featured GPS system with lifetime upgrade of maps. Now if you get the base model 255 like suggested, getting an upgraded map is as easy as popping in a SD card. I like the nuvi because of that feature, especially since I like to go to Europe and I bring the GPS with us. Having maps with you all the time is great.

I was tempted to buy one yesterday but I'm very happy with my 255 which is 2 years old.

here's a good matrix of what features the models have for the garmins, magellans, and tomtoms
