Windows 7 Beta - Win XP - Linux - Win 7
 

Howdy all.

I used the Windows 7 beta for a long time. But then the time limit hit me. Being short, money wise, I tried Umbutu Linux. I've dabbled with Linux for years, but it's not for me. So I went back to XP Pro. I hated it. I used to love XP, but after using 7 for so long, XP just seemed old and clunky.

So I bought the OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium from Newegg.

I'm happy.

At least my production computer uses OS X. :thumbsup:

I like linux, except for the few limitations (video games is the biggest one) it works great for me. I like the ability to change whatever you want in the system.

I run TinyXP right now with VMware running ubuntu 10.04. Does everything I need too and XP is stable when you don't do anthing in it.

This is fucking hilarious...because it's true. A stable Windows machine is an off Windows machine.

LordEden, sorry if I wasn't clear. I really didn't want to spend the money for Win 7. But when the Beta expired I had two legal choices: Windows XP Pro, or Linux. I was so spoiled by the Beta Win 7, XP and Linux just didn't "work" for me. I tried Vista and hated it. MS got Win 7 right, in my opinion. Trust me, I'm not a MS fanboy.

Have any of you had bad luck buying/installing OEM MS Windows?

All I install is OEM copies of, dell/gateway/hp install a crap ton of bloatware on your PC. I like the smallest version of windows xp. Which is why I like TinyXP.

Do you have a .edu email address and $30?

I installed a great version of Win7. It's got a great loader which allows me to remove all the items I don't want or use. While that was great when storage was a premium, I kind of don't care so much.

As far as linux, I got ubuntu finally, but eh, also don't care about what I can and cannot configure. I just use it to keep the corporate snoops from snooping.

I use Linux Mint, and it took care of setting up everything for me. :)

I also use Mac OS X, but only to manage music and photos. I also have Steam on it, but will wait to play Half Life 2 until the temperatures outside are too cold.

Sorry kids, Win 7 is great.

For you maybe, I'm not a huge fan of it. I have to learn it for work, but if not for the want for gaming (I hate fucking around with wine with video games, to much configuration) I'd be completely linux.

These arguments always go the same way -- that is to say, nowhere.

The best operating system for a given operation depends on the requirements of the user.

I use both Windows XP and Linux. Both satisfy my needs in different areas. I don't have enough experience with 7 to say much about it, but I'm thrilled for you that you like it. Really.

This isn't even an argument. Where's the argument? An argument can't go anywhere if there isn't one to begin with. I think that's telling though. It's like there's some assumption that there's going to be an argument because more than one operating system was mentioned in a thread. That amuses me.

Anyway, I view Windows 7 as "Vista, but fixed." I will get it one day.

I have no reason to use Linux, so someone give me a reason to mess around with Linux and I will.

I never intended to argue about OS choices. I just really like Windows 7. I have used Linux for years, and I really liked it, but I like games. Wine is a pain. XP worked just fine for me for several years. But comparing XP to 7? Windows 7 is a much better OS. That's my opinion. I don't even factor in Vista. I tried it, hated it. I do agree that Windows 7 is Vista "done right."

Really, whatever works for you is fine with me.

Jove, Linux is pretty cool. I like it a lot, but it's just not as "easy" to use as Windows 7. You have to be willing to learn and tweak if you want to run Linux as your OS. I have no problem with that, but getting games to work is a pain.

Win XP has trouble using more than 3gig ram. Win 7 does not.
If you are going to multi task demanding programs Win 7 may have an advantage
because you can install 8gig or more of ram.

I'll stay with XP for now. I have played with Win 7 Ultimate and don't need/like it.

flat5, the memory usage issue doesn't have that much to do with XP/Vista/7 as much as it has to do with 32 bit/64 bit. A 32 bit OS can only use around 3.5 GB of RAM. A 64 bit OS can use a Lot more.

Yes, thanks for reminding me.
In XP 32bit 4gigs of ram will confuse the OS and it will constantly crash.
Win 7 32bit will allow 8gig of ram to sit there so dual boot 32 & 64 will work better.
Is this true?

I have 4GB of RAM with my XP 32 box and it is very stable. I only get 3GB usable.

My win7 64 with 12GB is also very stable.

In another thread I talked about my new computer.
The motherboard has two slots - dual channel.
I installed 2 2gig 800mhz modules.
XP installed but after loading the first program the OS kept crashing.
I removed the ram and installed 1 2gig 667mhz module. Everything stable.
I now have 2 1gig 800mhz modules.
I was told that XP does not like 4gig and that was my experience.

Did you play with the registry to get XP 32bit stable with 4gig?

I did not adjust my registry to get it to work.

I have dual slots for each channel, so I have 1GB x 4, I just inserted 2GB more and started up my PC. Maybe you needed to change the speed of the 2GB to 667 in your BIOS.

Right. I tried it a few months ago.

There are a number of reasons that your system might not've liked the 4 GB -- most likely culprit in my mind is your motherboard not being compatible, which may or may not be fixable with a BIOS update.

One possibility is not that Windows XP won't run with 4 GB. Windows XP runs fine with 4 GB, even if it's not fully addressable.

Perhaps. The max for the MB is 4gig.
