DX10 vs DX11
I totally never bothered with DX10 because I don't have Vista and I wasn't willing to patch it into WinXP.
But check this out... it's pretty incredible. ![]() here's just the vid of the benchmark app. You can d/l it from here. Unigine | Unigine (3D engine for games and real-time virtual worlds) Amazing. Of course you should be watching this in the highest res you can....

A lot of this is really not that different than what was advertised with dx10 vs dx9. We've had things like relief mapping and dynamic tessellation for quite some time, the problem is they've never become widely used enough to be worth the effort of making efficient. All these features: HDAO, tessellation, relief mapping (or its ilk), even raytracing are nothing terribly new. The trick is that they are at the stage right now that AntiAliasing was right as Half-life 2 was being announced and released.
Think about it. First Anisotropic Filtering became effectively free and the tech improved. Anti-Aliasing is pretty close to being effectively free at most resolutions in most games, and the tech is improving. Now we've got Ambient Occlusion getting thrown all over the place and while it does Hurt in terms of FPS in most games it's improving to the point where it's almost impressive instead of just chucking a shadow at everywhere that two edges meet. I would say tessellation and relief mapping style effects had a chance to follow in the same vein... but the problem is that unlike all of the others these two can have profound gameplay effects depending on how they're used. I've got a feeling they'll be handled differently, probably with demos like these getting put out every major DX update until either the average gamer has the hardware handle it on full by default or it gets a Killer App that forces it to be mainstreamed like Half-Life 2 did for physics and voice communications.

While that is accurate, few are hardcore games who upgrade upgrade upgrade. I consider myself a gamer, but no longer hardcore and definitely not casual. I like my gaming experience to be as best as it can, but many are content with the lower resolutions and still have the gameplay.
To me that's just not right at all. It's like watching Pan and Scan movies because it's good enough. This is why Hulu succeeds because it's good enough and doesn't need to be great. Because of this mentality for myself, I limited my play after HL2. Only getting CODMW2 because it's so freaking awesome that the minute details are not going to be missed. I can tell the difference in LFD2 and Borderlands, and I find it a shame. What is great is that now games don't get limited to what they are on release day. Every time I upgrade my hardware, World of Warcraft gets better. The same thing was for HL2. This benchmark tool will help people understand just like the 4:6 vs 16:9 difference that it's a fundamental difference worth striving for... But graphics should not hinder gameplay. Ever.

Cool youtube vids. I wasn't that excited before.but hey when I upgrade my videocard in the next 6-12 months, I look forward to a nice boost in DX11 features.
![]() I believe BFBC2 has some support, and Metro 2033 will also support it.
