Tethering from your PDA ???
Ok so I have a Samsung Blackjack 2 and recently I tried tethering with it. For those who don't know what tethering is, it is when you connect your cell phone to your laptop and use the cell phone as a modem to access the internet. I tried it the other night just to see what kind of speed I got and it was pretty impressive having the 3G connectivity. I am lucky enough to live in a strong Wifi area so I don't pay for internet but if I were somewhere and couldn't get a wifi connection it would be good to tether. I do not have a Tethering data plan from AT&T so Im sure I'll be charged for it but I didn't stay on long at all, just wanted to test it out. I called AT&T today just to see if my unlimited data plan included tethering and the rep told me that there was a seperate tethering plan I would have to purchase for 60 dollars ontop of my unlimited PDA data plan. So I would be paying around 90 dollars a month basically for 5gb of use a month. I figured if I was going to do that then I might as well just purchase a laptop connect card. So to cut to the chase I was just wondering if anyone did the tethering thing and if so what kind of plan did you have to purchase from your wireless provider. Also I guess the most popular question is.......Does anyone know of a way I can tether for free?? Cause EVERYONE likes FREE !!!

I've got a Sprint unlimited data plan with which I'd have to pay extra for tethering if I didn't use PDANet to tether my winmo photo to my netbook. Apparently it allows my phone to dial for data when tethered in exactly the same manner that it would if I were browsing the web via my phone.
I don't have the technical knowledge to substantiate any of this but I've been using it for months and have yet to be charged for tethering.

I used to be with Alltel but now am with Verizon. I have the unlimited data plan and tether all the time. Well over 1 GB a month of usage usually. I was told by both companies it was extra per month to tether but so far no charges!!

Look here: PdaNet -- Use your Treo smartphone as a Wireless Modem for your PC
For a one-time fee of $30, you can use that program to use phone/blackberry/smart phone tethering for free. It doesn't work with all models so do your homework.
