Pretty serious virus

Ok so I have a pretty serious virus on my other computer and I'm not sure where it came from. I was browsing a website I visit regularly when I got a warning from windows saying I have a spyware infection. Windows then began to download a virus scanner and since then things have gotten worse. The virus has locked out my access from my regular virus scanner (which is AVG), as well as changed my background, Crl Alt Delete wont even work. Before this happened I ran a scan and it seems the infected folders are key system folders which i cannot delete without disrupting my OS. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do other then reformat my hard drive? I would really prefer to not lose what I have on my computer. Thanks for any help.

First of all, boot into safe mode by holding F8 during startup. Out of the list of options choose Safe Mode With Networking, as you'll need internet access to fix this.

Once you're up and running in safe mode, pop over to HouseCall - Trend Micro USA and run a scan.

Without knowing what you've picked up, it's impossible to give more detailed instructions. If housecall doesn't take care of it, we'll have to figure out exactly what virus we're dealing with before we can go any further.

You have smitFraud .... Do not download the scanner your home screen is asking you to download.

Besides the latest AVG you will also need spybot search and destroy as well as super Anti-spyware. After your done installing and scanning with all these, get smitFraud Fix to fix you registry.

Spybot should pick it up if it is indeed smitfraud. In fact, I picked up smitfraud from TFP after opening the previous chat window one evening, though it behaved quite differently. It was a CLUSTERFUCK to get rid of with a combination of what Xerxys mentioned above. When all was said and done, spybot picked up one last smitfraud entry, but was actually able to remove it after the other necessary repairs.
